I am one of the ones guilty of giving out 5 stars when a 3 or 4 would have been appropriate. But I have been crucified/blocked/criticized for being honest and just got tired of being attacked. I try to be honest and point out what I see as mistakes or flaws but even that gets me in trouble. We are not here to make friends, but we do and friends don't expect 3's or 4's and they don't hesitate to throw a temper tantrum and even block you/me. I agree with what you say and am one of those that wish we could go back in time when reviews were not a way to get better reviews for your/my own work. Odd as it sounds, I have received 6 stars and then a long list of mistakes that need fixing. Just doesn't make sense to me. Nice work with this and I wish you all the best in the contest too.

I give fives too, there's no harm in it. I don't tell anyone their terrible work is good, but I do try and find SOMETHING positive to say. But, honestly, most of the people here CAN write, that's why we came here. I think that some of us who have been here awhile have improved our basics quite a bit. We know where a comma goes and how to write a proper sentence etc. So there SEEMS to be less help perhaps. There are people who help with fancier things, we just have to seek them out and bug them. LOL

I think this is something that fanstory should honestly promote this piece or ask people like you how to fix it. I have won contests simply because of a cat being included. I have had poems destroyed be because they are too dark, which are the ones that usually find a publication. I avoid reviewing things that I know I won't agree with. If I leave a lower than 5 I will explain why, and that if changes are made tell the reviewer I will change it, simply because they put the work in to learn. Usually it's as simple as not meeting requirements for a contest, or the spelling is wrong. I agree with pretty much everything you say. I hate when I get a sling of two star reviews simply because they belive I am advocating self harm, as opposed to what the message really is to bring awareness. Always trying to explain in the notes. I came here to learn and I know the reviewers that will help me be a better writer. Most times is a copy pasta with the same stuff. That's why I use this as more of a testing ground now before I attempt to get a certain piece published.

You have the perfect attitude to get the most out of this place, Michael. It can still be a huge pain and irritating as hell though, I'm sure you'll agree. So, we still blather about it and TRY and make improvements. We do on occasion get things accomplished. To be honest, the site is open to improvement and often takes suggestions to heart ... usually not as quickly as we'd like, but still, I've seen member ideas come to fruition in the few years I've been here. So it does pay to be a squeaky wheel. Thanks for the great feedback and stellar review. mike

I have given you a five star rating, not because I want you to feel good, but because you have raised some salient points from what appears to be an objective stance. It is easy to see that members can abuse the system to earn member dollars etc and give glowing ratings for substandard or average works. Not me. I think I rated another review contestant very harshly a few days ago.
Be that as it may, you have presented your objections in an organized manner and used evidence to support your point, at least one.
I believe your entry may be considered a good one in the contest.

Thanks so much, Sandra. I've found you're reviews to be most helpful and well thought out. One thing we all appreciate is a reviewer who READS the work and comments on it. You always do that and it puts you sooooo far ahead of the game. An exceptional review. Most appreciated. mike
