I think many of us can relate to your words. For those who can't, they are now in the ground. Sad to see the crumbling of trust and goodwill. Life does do a 360, trying to figure where in the pendulum we stand today?

Such closeness to my real post WW2 childhood. The streets were our life. Running freely around from morning to night, mothers yelled out of the windows to come in for dinners. Although a small world it had it own beauty.
So I agree with the author

Where are the friendly neighbour's kids with whom we once held court,
while sharing one's bright treasured wares with others once was sought?
I yearn for those bright childhood years where troubles once we'd share. Quite an enjoyable memories provoking poem.

In our days, there were times when we could pick up a hitch hiker and give them a ride to their next destination. In this day and age, we would not dare do such a thing. How times have changed. Enjoyed your poem as always.

A well-written poem stating a true story of how protected kids are now. They are transported to play dates and overly protected. We walked to school, the entire project was our play yard without supervision.
Well done
Blessings
Mary

I agree. My childhood was the same. I took a seminar a couple of years ago, that stated because today's children don't have that neighborhood experience that we need to teach them how to get along and how to work out problems. All of that was taught by children playing in the neighborhoods.

Thanks for sharing this. I can totally relate to your words which show a transition from a kinder, gentler time to where we have evolved to today.

Society as a whole has become calloused. Doing the right thing, being honest, and helping others seems to have fallen by the wayside.

You brought back many memories of how different things were when I was growing up, Thank you for that.

I grew up in the same kind of neighborhood, Roy. We didn't lock our doors my entire childhood!

My favorite line: Possessions seem to be the source on which our mansion's built." Yes, indeed, possessions are king, not kindness and compassion.

A lovely poem, even though its message is a sad one.

In the little community where I live, I still see some yards filled with kids
playing for hours on end, but I don't see as much of this as when I was a kid. Your vividly descriptive poem tells how it is for many--how parents have to shelter their kids.
