This was an entertaining and thought provoking read. With a nice flow and feel to it, you have described your character very well. Including his own quotes is a nice touch. Diana

His was a brilliance beyond definition. Lady Windermere's Fan , Importance of Being Earnest are wonderful comedies Picture of Dorian Grey is his best work I think Thank you for this post .You have taken me through a nostalgic trip..
"be yourself; everyone else is already taken' perhaps is his best advice to others and it is a rule by which he lived( instead of existing ) himself.
Santha.

I liked "The Picture of Dorian Gray" so much that I've read it three times over the last 30 years.

I like the line, "To love one's self starts a life's romance." Makes him sound conceited, but it's true and has been said by others in various other ways.

I liked reading these two lines: He said he'd nothing to declare except his genius! (which I read gen-i-us)

You've told me much about this talented writer. He died, more or less, for being gay? What a tragedy.

Thanks for this, Debbie. I enjoyed reading it and learned a lot from the poem and the author's notes.

Hello Debbie,
Wit and genius combine to make a remarkable person.
Even Alan Turing, who helped save a country,
was prosecuted in the early fifties.
The importance of timing and location.
Marvelous poem with excellent meter and rhyme.
Well done.
Best wishes.

Thank you Robert for such a generous rating! I'm absolutely delighted it resonated with you. Yes, it's absolutely reprehensible that these geniuses' lives were shortened because of their homosexuality. Thank you so much again, Debbie

Mmmm.... I hate homophobic people. I don't understand why it was a sin and a crime.

Thank you for the information in your author notes. Good job.

This was a tragic story of an amazing talent essentially being cut off in his prime by the harshest of punishments simply for having a homosexual relationship. Thank you so much for your kind rating and comments. Take care Debbie. PS I think Wilde would have wholeheartedly agreed with your quote!

Debbie,
An excellent tribute to this marvelous fellow. I had the great pleasure of being in The Importance Of... as well as, later, directing it twice. The first time was a slightly (rather) edited version that I cast youngsters in; it was an amazing success; Oscar would have been blown away, I swear! Second time was a professional cast from NYC, with a brilliant version of Lady Bracknell by an amazing man. I will always cherish my sense of admiration for Wilde, and your poem and notes are so respectful and right on! Congratulations.
Richard

Thank you so much Richard! Your comments are wonderful and I'm glad that I've at least done a tiny bit of justice to such a great man. His quotes are amazing and I just wanted to use them all but I would have been here until Christmas! Take care Debbie

Beautifully written Debbie, I only knew skimmingly, the facts about Oscar, Wilde, it seems he was only accursed of homosexuality, one that was unproven, really, but society would be a gossipy place. I loved your ballad style poem dear Debbie,, well done, blessings Roy

Thank you so much for your lovely rating and comments. Yes, he impressively counter-sued for libel but lost. His gaol sentence proved very detrimental to his health and he died 3 years after his release at the age of 46. Bless you, Roy. Take care Debbie

I adore your write Debbie as much as I adore Oscar Wilde and he was treated so badly at the time. It is very sad that his life was cut short because of his harsh treatment. Your words are poignant and honest.

For the sake of meter in these lines:

(Impressive was his learning too)

(But sad (his) downfall took its toll)

(perhaps this quote is very telling)

(and Echoed are his words ot truth)

A skilful write Debbie, well written and poignant.

Love Dolly x

Thank you so much Dolly for this rating and your very helpful comments which I really appreciate. I think I'm so worried about the syllable count that I forfeit meter to it as a result. I changed all but 'perhaps this quote... (9 syllables) which is now 'perhaps this quote is pertinent' Is that ok? And would you suggest it better therefore to exceed the syllable count rather than lose meter? Sorry to bother you with this but I feel I need to resolve it. Debbie x

When a line ends in an unstressed syllable, as in (sensation), (this is called a feminine ending) and it is perfectly acceptable to add an extra syllable in these cases.

You lose the metre in line 12 because you start on a stressed syllable.

I hope this helps Debbie, love Dolly x x x
