Love that question-who passed away first Adam or Eve- it would be interesting to know! -it's a great title and a reflection on our times and how many hearts seem to be breaking.

    Hello Zanya,
thanks so much for the delightful review and comments. Until last night, I never even thought about Adam and Eve and their demise. The bible talks about how long the early characters lived, but it doesn't give any other details. I don't know why there is so much heartache in the world today. I think in part it's because we've become increasingly selfish and some folks approach marriage with the idea of what can they get from it. When they are no longer satisfied, they move on and the end result is a broken heart initially followed by anger and distrust.
    Have a blessed day gal.

I loved this post, Tom, and wish I had a 6 left. I agree with absolutely everything you said here, even about not particularly liking country music, but liking it now.

Truer words were never spoken about happy wife, happy life. That was the final line in my poem called "The New Couch."

As we seem to be aging faster now, my wife and I often joke about finding a cliff we can jump off together, holding onto each other on the way down, so that we won't have to go on alone without the other.

So many wise things you've said in this piece. And that heavy price we will pay if the other passes first and leaves us alone? I think it will still be worth it.

    Hello Jim,
thanks so much for the wonderful review and thoughtful comments. I hate the idea of Jan passing before me, but I love her so much I hate to think she'll have to go on without me too. Of course for each of us there would be some things that might not be missed, but we have partners for life for a reason, and after awhile the two do become one. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Have a blessed day my friend.

I think you are now attracted to country music because it reminds you of that happen time when Dad would sing along in the car. There's a lot to be said for nostalgia.

There is a lot of heartbreak in this world, and the older we get the more we see as our friends and family begin to show physical and mental signs of aging. Love, and death, and heartache - all has been with us since human life began.

A very thoughtful write, Tom, and I enjoyed reading it - as I enjoy all of your writing.

I still don't care for country music though; I'm more likely to be listening to that stuff with the warning labels on it. Even though we get our music from Apple or some other online source and labels don't exist there.

Have a great weekend.

xo

    Ha, ha, ha Pam!
I loved your response! I'm still laughing gal. You're more likely to listen to the parental guidance songs? That's funny. I do like one or two rap songs, but not for the lyrics, just the music. Skylar Grey sings a song with Nikki Manage or Monage or whatever her name is. It's actually the part that Skylar sings that I enjoy. I liked Gangster's Paradise too, with I believe it was LL Cool J, but that's about it. As I'm sure you're aware, I'm a pretty old fashioned guy. I love to see a lady in a dress and see a fellow open a door for the gals. I'm still in the dark ages, so I have an I pod, but its all filled up with 1200 plus songs, but I still order music for online listening from I tunes. As always gal, it's good to hear from you.
    Have a blessed day.

You cannot possibly think that I will let all the things you said pass right by me without comment.:-)

#1 Heartache by the number was written by Ray Price a biggie back then. It was sung by Guy Mitchell he made a lot of records but I really don't remember the name. It was his biggest song. He died in 1999 at thw age of 72.

#2 The saying is " If momma ain't happy, nobody's happy".

#3 And the most important .... if the excitement and memories of having sex with your dearly beloved do not last as lond as catching a fish, Then honey, you have been doing it all wrong! :-) Karen

    Hello Karen,
of course I expected a rather saucy response from you gal. For the record, its not the memories and excitement that didn't last as long, it was the act itself gal. When I was out fishing, I put in 14 hour days. I wasn't satisfied with one fish, I caught them till it was time to quit or they stopped biting. Even as a newly wed I couldn't compete with that. I'm sure that if I could have, Jan would have had something to say about that. Chaffing you know. Thanks for the great review and comments gal. I can always count on you to entertain.
    Have a blessed day.

Well, nowdays, I couldn't do much for very long, but in my younger days.... You had me belly laughing with that chaffing bit. Silicon gel my dear. No more chaffing or yeast infections. I think old age slows us down in that area so we don't break something! hahaha Love to you and yours. Karen

Very interesting tale, and nice way to tie in the love country music, to music about love, and the slow loss of a loved on. As you move through the post, you move to where people have more and more in common.

Well said.

I love the story, well composed and well organised and developed, and also the comments below. Yes, the price of great love is great pain, and sometimes the grief begins well before death. Your story is written with both sensitivity and encouragement and somehow conveys the fact that we understand and we care, when we hear of others suffering in these ways. Thank you for sharing.
Wendy

    Hello Wendy,
I know that you're all too familiar with the pain that comes with loving and caring for another person. It's a high price to pay, but no doubt one that most of us would gladly pay in order to experience love. Thanks so much for the kind words gal.
    Have a blessed evening.

Growing up I disliked country music too, but when I visited America for a holiday I enjoyed tuning into the country music station and enjoyed all the songs about love and heartache. I enjoyed your honest post Tom, but I doubt fishing is exciting as sex Tom! Ha ha ha, you made me smile, love Dolly s s s

    Hello Dolly,
thanks so much for the delightful review. I guess you must never have spent much time fishing, or at least catching fish. When I first started fishing, I was way too young for a sexual experience, so the endorphins that were released when I caught a fish made me feel pretty good. When I was fourteen I kissed my first girl and I realized that other things could be as exciting as fishing. One of my greatest regrets in life is not going fishing with my dad once because I wanted to be with that girl, now he's gone and I haven't seen here for almost sixty years. It's not that fishing is more exciting than sex Dolly, it's just that it lasts longer, and is still fun when you're catching. Have a blessed day my friend.

You made me smile Tom, do you throw the fish back into the water, or take it home for supper? Love Dolly x

    Hi Dolly,
the last time I was out fishing, it was in a stocked lake. It was at a popular tourist spot at Hatcher Pass, up in the mountains. I caught a half dozen rainbow trout, but they were small and I don't like trout anyway. I just like to catch them. When I was commercial fishing I used to keep out a coho salmon for the grill a few times a summer. I only like it fresh, not frozen. I kept fifty or sixty pounds of halibut fillets to carry us through the winter, and one year, in October, I was subsistence fishing using a long line for halibut. I caught a few as well as some rockfish, grey cod (or Pacific cod) and an eel that was about four feet long. I kept the halibut but gave the rest of the fish to a Korean couple who were running a restaurant. They cooked up the eel with soy sauce or some such thing and gave me some. It's the whitest meat, and so mild. It was delightful. I don't like freshwater fish, I'm too spoiled I guess. They're a lot of fun to catch though.

You are such an expert fisherman Tom, you certainly know your fish! I would be pretty useless at fishing I expect, I just would not have the patience x x x
