If I hadn't used my 6-star ratings already this month, you would definately have earned one for this story, Fiona. I was ready to give it a 5star by the time the first segment ended, but pleased to see the story continued. By the time it ended, I was in tears. Well done, Fiona. Just one typo...para 16 - 'time of it'.
I was pleasantly surprised to read that you live in beautiful Tasmania. Until July 2009, I lived in NSW but after 46years and becoming a widow, I returned to UK to live closer to my family. In 1990, my husband went to Launceston's Maritime College as a mature student (he was 59) and I visited him several times. I loved Tasmania, so did he. You live in God's country, for sure! This story could not be more perfect.
I laughed.
I cried.
I was shocked.
The use of italics is very helpful.
The dialogue is sharp and necessary.
There are no extra sentences of padding.
Sharp and clean.
