What an interesting trilogy. I'm glad that the scarecrow left as she probably knew you should have won! And so by default, apparently, you did! Now that whole lunacy about PC regarding black or brown face makeup does not make sense. It's more a reaction to the silly shows from decades ago when whites pretended to be black. But if someone adores a certain singer, I don't know it would be so offensive to try to look like that person. Good timing to re-promote this piece!

I thought it was a great essay on political correctness and how it can spoil simple moments like costume contests by jading our viewpoint and skewering our judgement to conform, or look like conforming, with the socially acceptable norms of the day. Told with the usual wit and humor we have come to expect from your work, this is chock full of little moments and twists and turns that illustrate your point. estory

Such a world we live in now. Makes a reader sometimes hesitant to even comment on another author's writing. I enjoyed this story ... the mix of truth and fiction and the absurdity of it all. Enjoyed the creativity of your writing, with all the humorous headings. Well done!

I enjoyed (and agreed) with this whole thing. I see it says "humor fiction". I'd love to think that the costume was true. Also your first commentary - is it a fictional event? It certainly rings true as something that would happen these days...

The only part that isn't true--per the footnote--is the second contest. Thanks for stopping by. Cheers. LIZ

WoW! You take these costume parties seriously. I imagine you could have fun as Sarah Palin, but it much have been hard to move around with all those attachments. Still I would have voted for you if I'd been the judge. As for the brown face, politically incorrect, I can't understand how that got to be so offensive. We used to do brown paint all the time for plays and such, but then that was Mississippi, and we were known to be racially insensitive. The guy in the first story was imitating his idol. That should have been flattering to the race. What do I know? Far be it for me to be deliberately insulting.
