You described well the sailor's choices and life:

The smell, the rage, the power, the tears
That keeps drawing you back each year
What of life on the main land after 20 years out here?
You make a boat, console your life and go sailing back to sea.

This is an extremely well written poem. It is very descriptive and I can envision this sailor's love of the sea, while in the Navy, and then as a civilian. Some people are just pulled to the water because of its calming effect. Of course, war would cause the opposite, but I understand how this sailor yearns for the sea. Beautiful poem and beautiful photo. Patti :)

You have done a very fine tribute to your father, someone you obviously loved very much. Someone you have a lot of respect for and of whom you were very proud.

It was very hard in the World Wars back then, and especially for families to see Dads, sons and daughters go off to war, not knowing whether that was the last time you would ever lay eyes on them. So many lives are lost in wars and then so many come home only to return again.

Being a sailor meant not staying in the same port for lenghty stays. Sometimes, just for a week ,or a month or sometimes never leaving at all. But, the main thing for them was that all the time, no matter where they served from, they would have been thinking of the family they had left sadly back home, and they would have been thinking of you fighting in the war alone there in the war.

They would be waiting for each day to check in the mail box to see, if there were any letters in the box from their loved ones, even then it wasn't easy to send letters back home at all. You still have the memories though of what you did with them before your dad left, although you may have been too young, but your mother would have filled you in on what a great Dad you had, before the Navy took him away from you, which you would not have understood at the time.

One day though you will be united in Heaaven and see him once again, and spend your days catching up on what went on since the day he left and went away .

Such a fine looking sailor, the picture is just wonderful, well done for all of this. Your dad would have been proud of you today. Love Beauty.

deepwater,

This poem speaks to the love of the sea in the hearts of true sailors who have never wanted to be anything else. Well done.

Your poemis a wonderful and valiant tribute to your father. His life must have been very ezciting compared to some, but I'm sure he also carried a lot of loneliness for his family.

This is a dramatic poem, both personal and patriotic that describes nostalgically your father's love for the sea. And I love the picture of him you used to illustrate. (I noticed a typo in the line, "that flag that fly's so high"; it should be FLIES so high.) Best regards, Jeanie Mercer

I think you gave a wonderful tribute to your father here. You really captured the spirit of a Navy man. I loved the words "sail beyond the sky." Beautiful image.
