Hi Annmuma,

This is a beautiful story and one that is difficult to read with a dry eye. It is a wonderful thing for a child to know they have parents who love each other. In a time when divorce is so common the love your parents had for each other is rare. I can't help but wonder why your mom died at such an early age. You wrote this very well and I wish you the best of luck in the contest. Blessings, chey

My mom suffered from a congenital heart defect which caused her to suffer from hypertension. In 1945, when my younger brother was born, she was told she probably would not live through menapause without a valve transplant. In 1945, her chances for survival in Alexandria, Louisiana were 50-50. She felt she had another eleven to thirteen years if she didn't have the surgery. She took the 11 years. If it were today, it would have been so simple, but then by the time - 9 years in -- that she thought the risk was worth it, her kidneys and the other organs were badly damaged and made her survival chances be less. Anyway, I was greatly blessed to have had her and my dad in my life. Thanks for reading and commenting. ann

Your Dad sounds like a wonderful man. Now you realize, he was taking those naps for her and not because he was tired. If only we could go back in time and realize how smart our parents were back then. Thank you for sharing this very heartwarming story and your family picture. Thank you for joining my contest. Best of luck to you in the contest, Shirley

I didn't really pay attention to anything technical, but this story was very touching and well written. Sometimes, I think real life experiences help us write our best! I admire both your parents' courage, and yours as well. Keep writing!

I got the point immediately. Your dad was very insightful. He allowed your mom to be herself and didn't take anything from her, even something as mundane and making the coffee, was important to her. I am sure your mom really appreciated having such a great, understanding partner. He realized that treating her like she had a disease--like a fragile glass creature--would have been worse for your mom. Instead he was just considerate and supportive. Good Luck in the contest.

Thanks so much for your generous review. I couldn't see Daddy's insighfulness then, but it became clear as I grew older. I learned a lot just from watching. I appreciate your time in reading and leaving your thoughts. ann
