I think this poem does an excellent job of giving a little insight of a lifer. They do tend to get out of touch with main stream America. After 20 years in, and then trying to enter a new world, many just build a boat and sail off to seclusion. Good writing!

This is one of those poem that just builds the further you read into it. This starts out okay, but then it hits you over the head with excellent poetic verve. This was just a pleasure to have read and written a review for... John

You could be writing a biography of any one of thousands of sailors who came back from their service disconnected from society and their loved ones. (I think it was meant to be "wondering" in the fifth line from the end.) I enjoyed your bits of rhyme and cherished picture.

Hi Gary,

Is the picture of you as a sailor? If not it still fits the poem perfectly. I doubt if a sailor ever gets over longing for the sea no matter how old he is. You wrote this well and I enjoyed it. chey

I really enjoyed reading this poem. It sounds like a great tale to tell of someone who is has spent so many years out at sea that it replaces land as their home.

P.S. It's actually been quite enjoyable reading all of your poems that pop up on the listing. Keep up the good work. They are all really great.

Hi deepwater,
You did a good job of entering into the sailors shoes and
asking lots of questions he might ask himself... or another might ask of him. In your last few lines you also apply suggested a possible answer. Congratulations on a well written poem.
Cheers, W ^-^

A very intriguing look at the sailor's life....
Was this you? We don't get to experience everything in life, but we can through the eyes of someone else.....
I like the entire story.. but, my favorite...
(What of life on the main land after 20 years out here?)
(You make a boat, console your life and go sailing back to sea)... That sums it uo for me.....
Love it! Bryan

wandering? wondering?
I have always heard that sailing gets into your blood and a sailor is a sailor until he dies. This was a good read with only the one (questionable) nit.

deepwater,
your poem is well written and a very enjoyable read. I loved the use of the old photo. Excellent rhymes and great imagery. I enjoyed the lines:
You've lived the life of a sailor around the world did you sail
From ship to ship, and port to port as wars just come and go
You fight for God and Country that flag that fly's so high
So isolated from your family as you sail beyond the sky

Your poem is a great tribute to sailors. A fitting poem for Independence Day coming up. Thanks for sharing.
Melissa.

The life of a sailor is one of travel and freedom. This is very well written with a smooth flow of words, making for an easy read.
