Mind ususally swings between the past which cannot be altered and the future which cannot be foreseen. The present is the only certainty and one could make the best out of it. My present is nicely made on reading your lovely poem. You have talked of 'discarded vows, promised green lands' poignantly but history(including personal ones) cannot be changed; it can only be rewritten. Why should we surmise about the future? Let us be in the present writing poems or reviewing them.

Every line raises questions; perhaps unanswerable. What are the those mental conceptions that we confuse with life itself? At best we our minds can only relate to them in a distant sort of way. Maybe we do live in a failed society but humanity seems to survive. The Roman Empire only survived for 400 years. As for the final question; it is unanswerable. -Ekim777

A truly wonderful well written poem GW, a reflection on a life past going forward to what is yet to come, same scenario as Dickens, 'A Christmas carol' absolutely faultless writing my friend, it flows like a dream and has a fantastic rhythm, I have saved one six all week and it is yours my friend for you exceptional poem.

" Discarded vows, For a Greener promised land"
I understand the plural use of the word truth but it does not quite right with through... Not sure which suggest there...

What is to happen? That certainly is the question that many people seem to be asking these days. Here's to hoping that we have the wisdom to survive. A very thought-provoking poem with a somber, yet honest viewpoint. And the picture is spot on I think. I enjoyed the poem and did not see any issues.

Broken or discarded vows are such a violation of trust. When you violate a person's trust you kill something valuable within that person. Some are so wounded that they hesitate to ever trust anyone ever again. I would hate to go through life knowing that I had caused such devastation.
