I enjoyed this post. I could see and feel your emotions. Thank you for sharing this story with us. Forty years ago my sons started a fire on a windy day. I will never forget standing in the street holding their hands and thinking we would probably lose the house. I saved what was important to me - my kids. I liked your treasures written on a calm day! Well, sir, you've had quite a life and you value the important things. I hope you don't have to face anothe fire, but it seems that you are ready, if it happens.
I enjoyed your story and thank you for your service as a marine. This country needs all the good men we can get.
Congratulations for winning the contest and for being recognized.

It's rare for a short piece of writing to make me want to actually go out and do something but this has made me want to put together my own old iron box. A piece of writing full of sentiment without being sentimental. And a list that reads so much better than a list should! I loved this, thanks!

I love your story! It was an interesting read, from the beginning to the end. It was well-written, it had a good structure and was absolutely understandable and relatable. I have a similar box at home, but I haven't looked into it for ages. It seems I need to check it :)

Thank you for the awesome rating! You are too kind. I am learning that many people have kept a curio chest over the years. Good stuff!

Congratulations on your well deserved win. I'm glad you reposted, or allowed this post to remain up. It is heartfelt and well written. It made me consider things that would be important to me, and I enjoyed reading about little portions of your life. Well done.

Nicely written. Good work.
So why didn't you drive your 'girlfriend' out? Or didn't you have her in 2001?
California forest fires are wicked.
Best wishes.

This is a great story. You have been lucky to have saved your box. You have many treasured items with memories of people you loved. They can not be replaced. You chose the most important things to save.

Comment from Thomas Blanks
Hey,
This is not really Thomas Blanks. I am a piker from England who likes to give people 3's and 4's for reviews for no good reason. I have only been on FanStory for less than a week, but I think I am quickly making a name for myself. I'm sure they were all impressed with my 4,417-word first post. I reviewed Thomas Blanks' Hitchbury Zone and gave it a 3, because it moved too fast, making me afraid I was going to spill my tea. Anyway, Cheers! P.S. Your picture is scary!

Strange, this is not really Douglas Goff. I am his doppelgänger, built out of spare Buick parts and an old defunct washing machine. I just posted a 5,000 word space story and was told that it moved so slowly that readers were going back in time and becoming lost. I laughed so hard that I wet my knickers. Anyways, Tallyho!
PS Your picture makes me giggle, because you are awesome!

I had to come see what you were writing.
Your writing skills are exceptional in every way. Easy, natural flow from paragraph to paragraph.
Loved the creative details you included when you wrote about the 'old iron box'.
Loved the voice of the character telling the story. Enjoyed the humor.
Both the character's voice and the outline of the what's and why's of the items chosen gave me a strong feel for who the character was as a man.
So entertaining and interesting. Congratulations on the contest win!

Quite a personal review of a life's important flotsam. I like the way so much of it is objectively sad but rendered in a positive way as memories of value. The box/ treasure chest is clearly the thing to take first. It doesn't seem necessary to have written out the other priorities before mentioning it.

The print said 5 items so I had to follow the rules, but I think I can make a better read if it?s just about the box. You are a mad genius! Much love
