very clever, cute, and fun to read.
I'm originally from Augusta, GA, home of the Masters Golf Tournament, and was fortunate to go every year I lived there. Over-confidence sometimes got the better of a player. What was reallyfascinating to me, was listening to them strategize with their caddies. Golf is a great game. I miss playing and miss going out to the National.
However, I enjoyed your poem! Congratulations on being recognized.

Thank you so much, Katherine. I haven't played much lately due to some physical ailments, and I miss it too. But at least I can write about it to keep it in my life.

and you do it entertainingly and well.

This is great tour de force. Telling a story with such a specialised vocabulary and rhyming with great aplomb is a major achievement! I am getting more and more keen to play golf. Very competent in terms of control of form and structure!

Thank you very much, Sarah. So glad you enjoyed it, and I really appreciate the 6 too. You helped push it over the 26 limit. I'm very grateful! Jim

I think you have great skill with rhymed poetry. I've just come back from visiting my old flat which I have to clear so a bit late in looking at the site today!

That blasted ball! I love the flow of this poem. I am not a golfer but caddied enough for my old man as a kid to understand the game. I have never heard of the poem you mentioned, need to look it up. Excellent work.

Thank you very much. "Casey at the Bat" is a famous old American poem written in 1888! It has been recited by school children for many years when they have to read a poem to the class.

I'm putting it down to the fact that I'm Australian as to why I never heard it. I just looked it up, actually think yours flows better

Oh this was such a wonderful read! I didn't have long as I have to get my kids to bed and when I clicked I thought "oooh...maybe I'll pass" but my silly fault. I read the first 2 lines and was hooked!!! Your rhymes were so smooth and meter fabulous that the story just raced excitedly onward. Even the golf jargon to which I'm unfamiliar felt so naturally part of the story. I wanted to sigh with the crowd on the last line when the ball just teased and missed!!
Well written and fun to read.

Thank you so much, Karyn, for such a glowing review and the 6! So happy you got hooked on a golf poem.

That had to be the funnest (if that's a word) poem I've read in a long, long time. I especially liked your last stanza where you did a number on Casey at the Bat -- right down to the lipped-out one-upping "struck out". Great work, Jim!

Thanks so much, Jay. Glad you enjoyed it. You put me over the top with your review being the 25th. Thank you, my friend!

Technically, no. You need 26 for ATB (All-Time Best)

I realize that now. Fortunately, someone else came through.

Great rhyming and fun to read. Your poem inspired by a classic one, is very well written. I am not a golfer, but sympathized with Wile for all the things that went wrong.

Noooo!
Blew it at the very end? How dreadful! Then again, I suppose he was a little overconfident, wasn't he? I have to say, I'd have loved to see my ex do such a thing. lol
A fun read, Jim

I loved this poem and especially the references to Casey at Bat which is one of the best sports poems ever written. You should send this around to Golf magazines -or elsewhere it is quite good and publishable.

Such a rollicking read and an unexpected conclusion. Your poem made for an exciting read, anticipating what might Wile do next? I know the frustrations of golf only too well. Great work.

So do I. I've sure lipped-out a putt or two in my time!
Thanks for the great review, Jacqueline.

My pleasure. So the story was about you? Haha. Good to be able to laugh at yourself.

Super take on the old classic! My dad was an avid golf aficionado and I can feel him smiling down from the great 19th hole in the sky as I read this one out loud! Ernest Thayer wrote the best baseball poem ever ~ and I don't think it's a stretch to say you've done the same for golf.
(I have difficulty with "Par Three" courses, but hey, different bogies for different skill levels, right?)

My pleasure!
My (corny) dad used to joke:
Why did the golfer carry an extra sock in his golf bag???
A: In case he got a hole in one!
