You do make me chuckle! Why change the name to Annie and then tell is it was Bridget, your daughter?

I was scratching my head on that one!

I've been through a few snowy Halloween nights -- never a blizzard, though!

The kids hated having to wear coats, hats, mittens and boots over their costumes...

Your ending? It did remind me of those TZ episodes...

Glad that casualty list was fiction!

Hi Sweetie. If I told it was Bridget, it was after the contest was over. Too many people have heard me talk about her before so I was trying to hide my identity the best I could.
Thanks for getting me an ATB. I knew I was one short, so I appreciate it so much. And the great review and comments. Love,. Debi

    Okay...

    Got it...

I guess it's better to be extra conscious of not blowing the anonymous thing!

    Nice!

BTW--I intended to mention above that I am sorry Wayne is still struggling... I am praying for covid to release him!

That's a spooky interesting ending. I remember we were in midnight Mass for Easter and we went outside and there was a blizzard going on. Hey dude come on suddenly don't they?

Hi Liz, oh that is so funny that you had the same thing happen to you. Was that in Minnesota? My story was all true, except for my daughter's name, Bridget, and the ending. It was only supposed to be a dusting of snow and ended up as the surprise Blizzard of the century of 1991. We've not had one that early since. But I was lucky to get home. And to keep it real for me, I found a picture of a 1989 Isuzu Trooper. Just like the one we owned then.
Thanks for the kind review, my dear friend. Love, Debi

Oh, Vermont. That is such a beautiful state. I love it there, but they do get their snow too.
reply by Liz O'Neill on 11-Oct-2024
We sure do and it is a beautiful state even with the snow.

Oh my goodness Debi, this is a horror story! We start off with good intentions and then the weather thwarts our journey. I was once stuck in the snow and I shall never forget how scared I was. Glad this story was not true, love Dolly x x x

Oh, Dolly, thank you so much. You are so right. Living in our area, this is not so unusual. Many times the forecast is for light snow and then if you aren't updated it can turn into a blizzard. That is what happened that night with my daughter, Bridget, her friend and friends mom. We barely made it home safe. But it was the Halloween Storm of the Century and it happened in 1991. However of course the ending was the only fiction part.

I wanted to ask you if you live in London? Our pro football team played there on Sunday and I was thinking of you. They are called the Minnesota Vikings. Then won that day. Actually undefeated this year and I am a big football fan.

Thanks again, my sweet friend. Love, Debi

No Debi I don't live in London, although I visit the city from time to time. I live in Lichfield which is in Staffordshire. How lovely that your football team visited, I hope they enjoyed themselves, love Dolly x x x

If you were on the casualty list you'd have to be dead, but of course it's a fictional
story, phew, you are here and now dear girl so there's no problem, a great entry in this contest dear Debi, well done, good luck, blessings Roy I.

Haha, did you ever get those old shows like "The Outer Limits" or
"The Twilight Zone" when you were a kid? Those were the kind of endings they would have and they used to freak me out so bad and I hated them, but had to only use 100 words and didn't have an ending. So I borrowed one from one of these guys. Haha.
Anyway, thanks so much for the kind comments, dear Roy. Love, Debi

Very nice contest entry. Very well written.
I remember snow on Halloween when I lived in Michigan as a child. Kids' costumes would be totally compromised with heavy winter coats.
Best wishes.

Oh dear me...now that's not what I expected at the end and of course, that's how you planned it. Well done, Debi! What started out as a little fun on Halloween turned into something far more serious.

You succeed with the Twilight Zone type ending. Nice use of irony: It was the last year Annie could trick or treat. The next to the last sentence is very long and contrasts well with the short dramatic last sentence.

Hi Gunner and thanks so much for the awesome review and comments. This is all true except my daughter's name and the ending, obviously. But the Halloween Blizzard of the Century was true. My friend and I took both our daughters out in it and they jumped out of the back and trampled through the snow just to trick or treat. We only took them to the people we knew and trusted so it was scary driving in it. Anyway, thanks again. The contest is over and I just missed first place by one. Loved, Debi

Chilling. Pun intended. What a cool (pun unintended) short story with an unexpected twist. It did have a "twilight zone" feel. The weather conditions set us up for a very different turn. Snow in October? I guess that is contingent upon where you live. But a blizzard, great plot device. A very nice way to develop your opening words, "seemed like a good idea at the time". In spite of the outcome, her actions seemed clear and rational at the outset. Good job.

An excellent entry for the A Good Idea writing prompt. I liked this Halloween flash partial fiction. The twist/surprise ending was perfect for this style of story. good luck.
