Wonderfully written, but to me it's a sensationally written mental picture of an early morning life in the forest rather than a poem. With stunningly beautiful birds. Let me add however, the picture you've painted is truly delightful. Sorry, I'm just a failed grumpy old poet. Apologies if I've offended.

Thank you for your honest review. I know free verse can sound too prosy sometimes. When that happens I go back to iambic pentameter for blank verse for a while, ha ha.

We are birdwatchers too and I enjoyed reading about all the ones that you see. We have many of the same birds that you see here in North Carolina. Bird feeders and a natural habitat lure them into our backyard.

Very nicely done.
Blessings

Thank you for your kind review! Maybe someday I'll see those birds in North Carolina.

Wow! You live in a beautiful neck of the woods, Crystie. That's Bigfoot territory. Have you ever seen one? Pristine wilderness. Do you live in Brighton? You're so lucky to live there.
You did a good job with this free verse, targeting the various species of birds and the Utah forest.
My favorite lines,
"Black-hooded Steller's jays
perch on high pine limbs,
like indigo protectors"
and,
"Dark, alert eyes under grandfather-white brows
seem both regal and roguish."
and,
"When the jays have eaten their fill,
they fly downwind, just to explore campgrounds,
rout among refuse, hop on wood tables,
or scold campers who have slept in late."
Nicely penned!
Good Luck in the Free Verse Poetry contest!
Hugs,
Kimbob

No sign of Bigfoot here. There is a high school called Brighton about four miles to the northeast of us, and a ski lodge called Brighton up Big Cottonwood Canyon. Thanks for your detailed review.

Such awesome birds they are and love the way you have poetically distinguished them here from the others... we don't have them here, but I remember enjoying them on my travels through Colorado years ago... Wonderful offering for the contest, my lady -- thanx for sharing and best of luck! ;) Yvette

How lucky you are to have all those birds at your beck and call, so to speak. When I was at my old house, we had birds in my garden all the time. And squirrels too. Enjot the week. Karen

This was a lovely piece of imagery. I particularly loved the line "Mosquitoes move more slowly in the colder air." I could really feel how cold it was with this line and you showed this in an excellent way. A brilliant piece, I really enjoyed it.

Thank you for your generous and detailed review. I was thinking those mosquitoes would be easier for the birds to catch, too.

Hi Crystie,
Boy, you know a lot of birds and are lucky to see so many varieties.
I assume the artwork is of the Black Hooded Steller's Jay. I like the personification and metaphor in this free verse poem
Keep writing and stay healthy.
Good luck in the contest.
Have a wonderful day.
Joan

Besides presenting us with such a lovely picture your words painted a vivid scene of all the birds and their busy activity as they seek out their food. You have a vast knowledge of them..Awesome1

Such a beautiful picture followed by a delightful poem about wild birds and their behaviours treating the reader to a virtual cornucopia of color and sound

What is that bird pictured herein? Fascinating. I am a little familiar with the Wasatch Range. SLC in particular. I have investments with Wasatch Premier Properties throughout the five Western states.

The Steller's jay is a fun bird to watch, as the photo shows. Thank you for stopping by to read and comment.
