This is a chilling pows reminding me of world war one when many soldiers were cannon fodder and we lost a lot of young men.
A couple of suggestions for the sake of grammar:
It was freezing cold, my hands (were) numb but my enemy (was) near.

I don't know how you did it - write a short story in only fifty words. I'm attempting the one hundred word short story and find it difficult. Well done. Note: there are a couple of spelling/grammar errors.
