Sandra, this is terrific. This poem is filled with interesting metaphors and word choices. But its best accomplishment is how it masterfully describes a chilling and seemingly hopeless situation.

No, the world is as bad as ever if not worse. It's so sad. Your poignant free verse resonated with me.
I am no poetry writer, but I will fan you. I would like to read more of your work. Good luck in the contest. Ulla:)))

This poem truly touched my heart and filled me with a great sadness. That it was written 20 years ago was a surprise to me, as it sounds so much like what is going on today. Thank you for sharing your talent with us.

A very heart-wrenching verse. - Unfortunately a shooting death or deaths are the lead in stories nearly every night. I believe it is the products of poverty, drugs, absent fathers, but also inner city schools are just warehouses and offer little hope or pride.
My best wishes,
Mary

Thank you for your comments and exceptional rating. There is enough blame to go around for these conditions. Everyone may eat a slice of that American pie, and some may have two slices.

Sandra...

The haunting normalcy and tragic futility of your words shatter the patina of our calloused and complacent acceptance of generational violence--as individuals, as communities, as a nation and as a culture. The fact this twenty year-old depiction of hopelessness and despair still seems current underscores the epidemic of apathy and acceptance we face.

Your writing is powerful and poignant. Your word choices and metaphors evoke and enhance the sense of despair created by the patterns of apathy, anger, and brokenness you reference:
- cracked cemented crevices of a sidewalk leading nowhere
- dying while still possessing moving flesh, they take no
- ownership for life
- angry apathy erodes the fertile soil
- many more mothers' and fathers' weeping faces will hover
- over manmade death boxes

Kudos to you, Sandra! Well done. Thanks for writing and sharing this powerful poem with us.

Blessings...

Curt (WRW)

Thank you for your heartfelt comments and excelent rating. There is enough blame to go around for these conditions. Every American may eat a slice of this American pie, and some may have two slices. Shucks there are some places where whole pies and cakes of blame are being served.

This is a hard hitting and tragic scene exposed here in your melancholy poem Sandra. The shootings leave many people bereaved and sorrowful, how very sad it is to resort to killing each other on the streets. I am glad I don't witness this in my town and expect everybody is mournful. A fine free write skilfully written, love Dolly x

Thank you, Dolly, for your comments and rating. Because you don't witness it in your town doesn't mean it is not happening. This is a tragedy whether I personally experience it or not.

What a powerful sad truth as what you stated in your notes that you had written this twenty years ago and things are still the same today. Your photo that you chose adds so much to the feeling of being trapped in a vicious cycle. Reality , I don't know how to say or put into words.

Hello dear Sandra! The depth and power of these words will linger with me into the day. The message you share is one of true unfathomable heartache. The reality for so many families, their sense of great loss of sons they love - and daughters too. Caught in webs of drugs, violence, gangs, crime rehashing and reliving the sins of the fathers, and mothers too, in a vicious cycle. It enrages and sparks a passion that life could be so disregarded and as you say "no reverence" for the life of another. Would they all but know they are born and made in the image of God himself and loved with a deep love that knows no bounds!!
Powerful words Sandra and brings to light these awful events and families affected by them. I love that you can use your voice and pen to speak to this. May this poem truly rise to the top in the contest. Xx

A riveting poem, with stark images.
Stand out writing:
-Moving sidewalk scenes, life in the raw elements.
-Sounds and ragged images you get in this poem are painfully startling: blood that flows, through cracked cemented crevices, almost like blood rushing through cracked arteries and veins. Sounds of being gunned down and fiery flames of disillusionment
This is a mind blowing poem, covering two decades of loss, haze of stifling sadness.
A powerful write. Please receive my words and expressions as recognition and acknowledgment of your writing talent. All the best.

another powerful and moving poem about the African American community, and sadly the violence and self-hatred that takes away too many young lost souls
