A lovely story with a fine message about love and how the music industry thrives on it. It's always sad when hearts are broken for whatever reason and it's not something from which we can easily recover. Music can help in a cathartic way by demonstrating a commonality, that this has happened to others and that life can still go on. I think this post is crying out for a video, Tom. But thank you for sharing your excellent piece. Have a great weekend. And don't forget to do whatever your wife asks of you:)) Debbie

    Hello Debbie,
I'm still laughing at your last comment gal. Just this morning I went out and put string on the weed whacker so she could clean out an area that I have no idea why it's so important to her.
I'm not sure what kind of video you have in mind gal. I didn't look on line to see if Lee Greenwood has a video to go with this song. I'm still in the dark ages when it comes to being able to utilize the various things a computer can do. All I really wanted it for was to do emails and things like Fan Story. Thanks so much for this delightful review my friend.
    Have a blessed day.

What happens when you play a country song backwards? You get your house back. your dog back. your truck back lol Your piece is interesting timing as I posted a piece and a song about this topic last week. I used to hate country music but over the years it has improved quite a bit and now there are some really good songs with strong messages in them. Love songs will never go out of style because love and the good and bad it brings to our lives will never end.

    Hello Marilyn,
I see that I will need to check out your post gal. The comment about playing country music backwards is funny. I wonder if you leave the bar, start loving only your spouse and drive electric cars too? I agree, love songs are here to stay. There is something in our makeup that needs to express our feelings out loud to anyone who will listen. Thanks so much for the excellent review and comments gal. Have a blessed day.

Tom, if you go to my portfolio, click on the chapters for the book called "I Never promised you a prose garden" and scroll close to the bottom for the song called roadkill. the audio is below it. Hope you enjoy.

This is an excellent example of a rant. You talk about others on this site and you talk about your father and your wife. You complain about other forms of music even though in the early days you didn't like country music at all. Then as you grew older you found you liked it after all well I am happy for you but other forms of music are just as meaningful and important. So, lighten up and give others a break as far as listening to music is concerned.
Asking for both spouses to die simultaneously is strange. Yet I understand the concept.
Everybody needs love that is the message you write about and I get that in the end, we are all the same.
Jesse

    Hello Jesse,
I didn't write it as a rant, but perhaps it comes across that way. I agree with you, other forms of music are equally delightful. I have very diverse tastes when it comes to music. I'm a big fan of certain kinds of new age music- Yanni, Enya, 2002 ect. I also enjoy most of the stuff from the sixties and early seventies, and I've been known to listen to songs from the forties and fifties.
The point I guess I was trying to make with both spouses dying at once is so that neither one has to suffer with the loss. I suppose if the marriage was on the rocks, it wouldn't matter. I don't want my wife to suffer if I go first, and I'm not sure how I'd get by without her. Thanks for the insightful review and comments.
    Have a blessed day.

This contemplative poem about the inevitable cost of love is sad and sweet. I like the saying, "Happy spouse, happy house." Marriage, and all relationships, require give and take. Country music does have a good emotional range to it, though there are plenty of songs about beer and trucks, too!

    Hello Mintybee,
thanks so much for the fine review and comments. Marriage, like any other project worth doing, requires a commitment. Its foolish to think that a marriage is going to be perfect when you have two imperfect people engaging in it. I agree about the emotional range of the songs too. It seems every other country song is about bars, beer, whiskey or cheating spouses. Thanks again.
    Have a blessed evening.

This was very wise. Love is all about sacrifice, compromise and enjoying he simple things. When you can cut out all the noise you can hear each other. There is no such thing as a perfect marriage. Two flawed people can not make a perfect union. But you can support each other and encourage each other. I've never been a country music fan, but I do like Lee Greenwood. I enjoyed your author notes as well. Thank you for sharing. Gretchen

    Hello Gretchen,
it sounds like you've got your head together pretty well. Of course we all start off our marriages with stars in our eyes, and it can be a bit of a surprise when we first realize that our spouse isn't perfect. I like Lee too, but then, I've discovered a lot of country artists that I enjoy. Thanks so much for the wonderful review gal.
    Have a blessed evening.

I quite country music, certain varieties I don't, some are too sad to be real. As an entertainer doing gospel mostly my own compositions, I did what God wanted..I hope. But you're right I think broken hearts are fairly normal, at sometime or other we've all had one. Beautifully written Tom, blessings Roy

    Hello Roy,
thanks for this great review. I corrected that typo, thanks. I think that the price of loving someone is often sadness. I've never been a big gospel fan, but I do like some Christian music. Anne Murray has a nice album with old time gospel songs I really enjoy.
    Have a blessed day.

I was shocked to discover that I actually knew some of the songs to which you referred in your author's notes. I enjoyed this article on your experiences with country music. Thank you for sharing, and best wishes to you.

    Hello Jessi,
thanks so much for the great review and comments. I surprised myself when I discovered that I actually preferred some of the older country songs to some of what's playing on the radio now. I still love the music from my generation - the sixties and early seventies. Actually I enjoy quite a diverse selection of music. Everything from Chubby Checkers to Enya and Yanni. I can't play a note of music, but I sure love to listen. Thanks for dropping by gal.
    Have a blessed evening.

I think many marriages fall apart because people are loath to work at them (this didn't used to be the case). We have entered an era of demanding instant gratification in all aspects of our life, and graft is no longer in fashion. Thanks for your perceptive essay on this subject. kay

    Hello Kay,
thanks so much for your wonderful comments gal. I fear that you're right. We want everything right now, from a burger at Mc Donalds to the green light at the intersection. Some things can't be rushed though, and actually, there is a lot of joy in making good memories. Thanks so much for dropping by.

I loved your final line in your notes! And recently Marilyn posted her country western song - last week, I think and I thought it was hilarious. But you're right songs about broken hearts is something we all can relate to! Appreciate you sharing and I know you are motivated to write because of what some writers like Adonna and Ginda are going through. Well said!

    Hello Helen,
I'm not sure which Marilyn you're speaking of. I'll look her up if you let me know. I feel so bad for Adonna. Her recent two poems are heartbreaking. I don't know how she can express herself so well with all that she's dealing with. Mary Virgisin's husband is dealing with some issues as well. I thank God that these ladies have the quality of character that they are staying the course, regardless of how trying. I wish that their stories were available to the whole world so that their shining examples could bless others. Thanks so much for the delightful review gal. I appreciate you!
    Blessings,

This is a very perceptive story about love. Another reason for failure of love is that we all change and sometimes we end up miles apart. I think that one isn't done too often in country music because it is so unexplainable. There isn't so much of the drinking and fighting and carrying on badly in the most recent country music.

    Hello Carol,
thanks so much for dropping by and reading this post, I appreciate it. I primarily listen to classic country songs, so they still have a lot of the booze and adultery issues. Some of them are really, really funny too. I still enjoy many other genres of music, but it's hard for me to find a sixties station on the radio here, and I don't own a smart phone, so getting Spotify is out of the question. Periodically I'll peruse the music on I tunes and download a new song though.
    Have a blessed evening gal.

The one I have been enjoying is "I Woke on the Wrong Side of the Truck Bed." It's always on when I wake up so I haven't heard it all, but it is amusing.
