Congrats on post number 750 Jim. I loved the miserable gray opening lines to start this story. I was thinking about the things we do when we are young sometimes haunt the rest of our lives, as it has done with this story. I enjoyed the read all the way through. Well done,
cheers,
valda

When I am not directly mentioning the Lord, I write stories mainly that highlight the human condition. Thanks for your kindness.

Jim, your story took me to the past, watching a performance in Reno or Las Vegas. If Bert felt protective about his daughter, he certainly did a lousy job.

I like some of the lines: "The following night, I was hung over as I waited to perform. Not by alcohol, but by shame."

Thank you so much. I write poetry only to get more familiar with the forms, but I love writing short stories that deal with the human condition.

He needn't have worried. Chrissy knew exactly what she was doing. Makes me think of the movie "Dirty Dancing." What a great group of entertainers like Buddy Hacket, Morey Amsterdam, and Jerry Lewis. I would have been a thrill to have performed with them. Good job of creating the atmosphere of the place. It's a shame that the narrator's career went downhill after that. My thought is that if Bert was so concerned about his daughter's virtue, he shouldn't have put her out there when he knew there would be grabby customers, and entertainers. A story well told. Very colorful, with fascinating characters.

Thank you so much. I love writing about the human condition and love open endings, where the reader can think about the characters and situation.

This work has reached the exceptional level

This story has everything. Pathos, romance, jealousy, yearning.
It feels entirely real. This is outstanding. I have missed this voice. You do this type so very very well. It is my favorite type that you do. I know we are compelled to do all kinds of writings.
But I miss this gold you weave. Karen

Congratulations on your 750th post. Really well done, and I see your talents are spread over several areas of writing. I enjoyed your story and the tension and conflicting emotions within him as he fell for this gal, but didn't want to lead her into a type of life less than what he felt she should have, despite her seducing him. Well written.

And these memories of another age are well narrated here with a pace that keeps the reader engage and interested - not ' soppy' and 'silly' but has a real ring of verisimilitude.

Jim, Congratulations on milestone post #750! I swear you are hiding some of this writing from us. Wonderful writing. Great atmosphere in the story. Plus you can't go wrong adding in a Ringo Starr video!

Wow, Jim, she really know how to create atmosphere and build a story that seems inevitably heading towards its poignant conclusion. Your deep regret and sense of guilt for potentially leading her into a wayward life are palpably felt by your reader (although you may be a little too harsh on yourself) and a dark cloud seems to hang over this story which hooks us in from the start. Well done on this superb story, Jim, and your milestone. Take care Debbie

Jim, you are absolutely amazing at creating characters. Your specialty is the lonely elderly man, and you seem to take every ounce of personal experience, and your own personality, and invest them into creating incredibly believable and sympathetic characters. This is no exception.

You also always seem to manage to bring up things from my childhood that I hadn't thought of in ages. I can't tell you how many summer vacations were spend in the Borscht Belt when I was little, enjoying what had, at one time, been known as the land-bound cruise ships, for their unlimited food. I have wonderful memories of the hotels and bungalow colonies, and I'm sorry my daughter never got to experience them. Thank you for reminding me of a pleasant memory.
