Interesting story. Clothes of that time were all different from each other at least, as your photo indicates. But they didn't have the same importance in defining one's social staus as perhaps they do these days. Sad about that teacher letting you down - that wasn't at all fair.

I wish I held onto that sixth str. Amazing! All your stories hold me in all the way to the end, then I want more. There were a few grammatical errors, mainly with commas. But I truly enjoyed this.

Thank you, Jim. I've corrected a bunch of error but I'll go back and check the comma. I always appreciate your comments.

She certainly did let you down. Being a former student of hers, I would have thought she would have liked you to win to show other students what they could be capable of doing under her tuition. Some teachers can be very selfcentred. I remember the charity dresses, and the jumble sales. All the mums would go and rummage through them for any bargains. I actually like going to charity shops today, you can find some exellent expensive clothes for a fraction of their price. I enjoyed reading this part, my friend. :) Sandra xxx

Thank you, Sandra. I'm so behind that I have 150 reviews to reply to and I feel really bad about not getting to yours sooner because you went back and read all those chapter on Anatomy of a Marriage and even gave me extra stars. I'm trying to get to them. I had errors in this because I had cat jumping on the keyboard and driving me nuts. Thank you again. I love the resale and thrift shops. Some of my favorite clothes were recycled.

The first part of the story flows nicely with your conflict with your mom over fashion. I smiled and nodded throughout. Then it sort of switches out of clothes and fashion, like you are writing about a totally different subject. Would it be better to have two separate stories? There are some spelling errors, Dolly Parton, private lessons (plural), and a few others you can clean up with proofreading. It's an interesting memoir, and if you tweak it a bit, it's a winner. gayla

Thank you, Gayla. I always have more than one incident taking place within the same time frame. This time there was only two. Regular readers of the book expect this to be the case. I think I've corrected most or the errors,

A marvellous post, I feel for you Beth, to have a hero let one down, particularly when young is heartbreaking, But, as they say, it's all part of that rich tapestry of life, I enjoyed this and read it out loud to my appreciative wife, who had been a beacon to her students over the years, well done, blessings Roy
Typo : their (summons) summoned? 2 had other(s) students. 3: From Swe()den speak.

Thank you, Roy. I really appreciate the six stars. I've corrected most of the errors. But I will reread it. I appreciate you pointing them out. I had cat walking in front of monitor distracting me.

My mother dressed me until I was an adult, She was into clothes and fashion big time. I found clothes shopping boring. Your story is so enjoyable to read, I am sure many can relate. At least you managed to recite a story and won third place. I think many of us have had someone we looked up to disappoint us. Excellent writing here.

As ever, I enjoyed this story about your growing up but, sadly, Beth, I was distracted by the fact it clearly needed a proof-read before posting. Thanks for sharing. Debbie

You were very considerate to your Mom and her opinions about your dress. My kids soon had their own style and I had no control over what they wore. I enjoy thrift stores and you can buy some real bargains in them. We have 8 charity shops in my town and their business is thriving. I also give lots of my clothes to charity shops. I love recycling old clothing and often the material is better quality than new stuff. It is a pity that the teacher you admired so much had let you down like this, she was the loser here as your enthusiasm was to be commended.

I enjoyed your honest story here Beth, this is a good read.

What a shame that a teacher would put herself in the position of hurting a student just because she wasn't working with her. That doesn't say anything good. You did your best, and she didn't come through. As for the clothes, I can relate to them. I always thought we were dirt poor because of the clothes I had to wear. When I learned my father could buy cars and pay cash, and take trips to Florida, I realized his priorities weren't how I dressed. Good one, Beth!
