I'd always believed it was Oak. No reason for that, I don't guess, unless it's reading I've done about the Rood.
A great piece, Brooke. :0)

Nescher, the Bible doesn't say the type of wood. This is just a legend and I'd bet a fortune it isn't true as in historically accurate.
That's not the point of legends :-) Thanks, Brooke

What a lovely legend and personalized message. Coincidentally, some of the dogwoods were blooming in Kentucky, although it was still cold while we were there. I especially enjoyed your personification of the tree and your last powerful lines "compassion triumphs over hate,/and hope outlives dismay."

Joan, thank you - yes, several people in Georgia and Alabama have let me know they are already in bloom there - here it will be a few weeks. They are always out before mother's day but usually in really beautiful shape on mother's day. Brooke

I have never heard of this legend, but you presented it very well in poem form. Excellent rhythm, concept, and rhyming! I mean... what can I say!

Lovely story for a beautiful flowering tree. You remind me again that I must go through my gardening catalogues and order a dogwood for spring planting.
Lovely poetry, with great, flowing rhymes and rhythm. It inspires me.

A very good message indeed. Your poem is consistent in it's rhyme, the meter enhances the ease of reading, and the message is one that can never be told too many times.
