Hello Poet,
Your poem tells a touching story. It's vivid and descriptive, and complements the picture beautifully. You wrapped it up nicely with the image of a father imparting the wisdom he gleaned to his young son.
Well done!
Good luck in the contest,
Lana

This is really good. I enjoyed the story of how the boy grew into a love of learning and eventually became an attorney. Old Jimmy was a great teacher.

A very interesting tale of an educated child who wanted to learn to understand
stories. A very exciting and suspenseful time for this boy who learned how to read better and comprehend meanings of poetry. This makes a person a better writer. liberty justice

I loved this! It's not often you think about things like that. Not being allowed to learn is such a horrible tragedy. I can't imagine if my kids were not allowed to learn. They're too smart and seek knowledge daily. It's unimaginable to think of them not having access to it.
Very very good story poetry! Thank you so much for sharing.

What a terrific poem. I thoroughly enjoyed each and every line and left me feeling thoughtful at the end. So well written and packed with meaning. This says so much in so few words. A talented hand penned this. It deserves more stars than I am offering but will be surprised if I haven't just read the winner. X

This is a moving and powerful narrative poem. The line breaks certainly contribute to the poem's effect. I thought this was particularly true in the lines:
"Old Jimmy" died.
Suddenly.
Unexpectedly.
Furthermore, the image of the 'sailor' with which the poem ends is an evocative and apt metaphor for the effect of education and literature.
Thanks for sharing this with us. Nigel.

I so wish I had a six! I just love this story/poem! It was not long at all! It was so mellow and dramatic, and somewhat witty. Plus, it was heartfelt and educational and an insightful look in prejudice. Exceptional write! Have a happy day! Tony
