Please allow me to correct you in one aspect. The form was created by Ciliverde, all I did was stick a name on it.

This must have been a ghastly experience for you being so close to the disaster. sometimes these short forms are totally inadequate to express all the innuendoesof an event and they need to be expanded. In so doing you have maintained the essential shorthand feel of the quatrain.

I did know that about the naming thing, I just copied and pasted from a Potlatch piece, I'll go and correct. I will likely write a prose piece about the experience, I just needed to purge something at the moment. I had been in the process of working on my daily NaPo piece when Randy came knocking on the door. I've never felt so helpless in my life.

That is exactly how the quote struck me, too, so I had to write it. I will likely cover the entire situation in a prose piece just to get it all out. I appreciate the kind comments.

Hi Yvonne,

We don't live in a fire district. When he knocked on my door at 11 am it was for me to call BLM and let them know we might have a potential forest fire. It was so it wouldn't spread to my house, too. He and I did what we could to stop it, but it was too smoky to even retrieve anything. Other neighbors came with fire extinguishers.

BLM could do nothing but watch it burn and assess the situation. They assured me that with wet ground and still a fair amount of snow that we were safe. All I felt was helpless and wished I could have done more. Thank you for the thoughtful comments.

I'm glad it's not your house. I hope your family's safe from smoke and all that other stuff. That photo coupled with the poem is completely heart-wrenching. This situations sounds completely tragic. I hope your neighbors survived and had insurance coverage.

If they had any artwork masterpieces, it's an heirloom lost. If anything is salvaged, Antiques Roadshow would be a great place to get assessments on value and restoration. Art materials can add up quickly. I'm so saddened for them. It's a headache for everyone around too. Do they know how it transpired? How are they going to live?

Great poem. Informative and well thought out. Good author notes.

Hi Sunni,

It was a furnace fire and everything was lost. Randy is an artist and he lost all of his paintings. I looked out the window a little bit ago, it is still smoldering. I just wish we could have done more to save anything but the smoke was too thick. We have good neighbors here, another family that has just moved into town is giving them their old house to live in for as long as they need.

I can feel your pain for the loss your neighbor experienced today. How sad for the neighbors & you as I know you are a caring person.

You expressed your thoughts & feelings well with this style. The quote is perfect for all artists.

No amount of my words will ever make this better except to know that I pray for recovery as you allude to by his determination to build anew. You are right, though, that those things can be rebuilt, but his life was spared. This is tragic news. I feel bad for you & your neighbors.

Hi Jan,

I've never felt more helpless in my life. I'll be writing more, I'm sure. Thank you for your loving words. I do know you care. We don't live in a fire district, so we had the forest fire BLM guys out but all they could do was watch it burn and make sure it didn't catch the trees on fire and spread. It is still burning itself out unattended, well, except for when James and I walk down to look. It is wet enough and we still have enough snow that they assured me our house wasn't in jeopardy. Thank you for your friendship. Randy even joked that the one thing he found was the marshmallows. An amazing man. I wish we had been able to do/save more. I appreciate your friendship.
