I love this story. You introduce us to the family and their activities and attitudes, with Charlie as the main character. I was truly concerned for the missing cat, but all's well that ends well. Cute!

I'm glad Charlie/Charlotte turned up with her family and everything was OK. Being born in a car could have ended badly. Maybe going to church was the reason they were found before it got too hot. Seems the attendant at the shelter was sadly misinformed. It's true calicos are usually female and orange cats are usually male. Not always. Most cats can be either sex.

Grand story! The bit about multi-colour cats being female is quite true, but the others can be either. Gingers are usually male, but not infallibly. I like the way this story is told with just enough back story to make it easy to work out what's happening.

Ooh, a true story! I thought it was fiction because it was written to a prompt.

PenPal: great Charlie story about your cat. We have a tuxudo cat
name Chanel or Chu. They are great buddies and loyal to boot. You
received your answer to prayers and got extra cats as a bonus. I like
the humor and witness of prayers. Hope you win. flylikeaneagle

Really cute Charlie was a girl, we have a cat I call Sammy that adopted us. I thought it was a boy but apparently it's not. She lives in our carport. Your story is fascinating and well written. All the best, Laura.

What a ditzy attendant where you first got Charlie. I enjoyed your story, Mystery Author. Good job with the prompt. There is good flow and pacing to your story. The pictures are precious. We had a Thomas that turned into Thomasina (but we knew immediately the next day after 'he' showed up. Thanks for sharing and best wishes. Respectfully, Jan

Thank you, Jan.
Just out of curiosity, tonight I googled "How to tell the gender of a cat," and one of the sites cited the same thing the attendant said all those years ago! I was flabbergasted!
Oh, well, this story remains one of my favorite memories from my childhood. When I read the prompt this afternoon, I just had to share it. Even if it doesn't place, my kids have wanted me to put this story to paper for years.
Thanks again!

Most orange tabbies are males, but not all. My brother had a female orange tabby named Lucy. Most calicos are females, but not all. Makes me wonder . . .

We had two orange Tabbies. Sophie and Dickens...as in Charles Dickens... ;) It all boils down to "flipping up the tail" test...or so I learned tonight!

This is a great story. I thought for sure you lost your cat for good but instead ;you get female cat back when you thought you had a male. This is well told with great use of dialogue and I enjoyed reading. I like happy ending.

One of the most treasured memories of my childhood! Haven't wanted to pen it for years, and when I saw the prompt, well, I had to "go for it!"
Thank you again!

What an endearing story. I honestly thought Charlie was lost for good. I was wishing for a miracle and preparing for the worst. So glad Charlie was found with her six kittens. As for the gender mishap, they use to spout a lot of nonsense back then. Good luck with the contest.

This remembrance is one of my most treasured childhood memories.
I just googled how to determine a cat's gender, and the "color thing" still exists! Too funny! But the best way is to "flip the tail!"
Thank you for your excellent rating and thoughtful review!

Such a warm-hearted memory from childhood days filled with love and laughter and fun and prayers - written with equally warm tones - seen through the innocent eyes of a child

You had me worried that Charlie was gone forever, but it was so good to see that she turned up, and with six little Charlies to boot.
This is a well told tale. Best of luck in the contest.
