In my opinion, though dark in presentation, a beautiful and loving tribute, smoothly rendered about the love and commitment between lifelong partners...

A succinct and powerful piece. The title given to this poem is extremely effective in capturing the impact of Alzheimer's on the nature of one's commitment to another.
Very well written and wonderfully presented.

Thank you for this lovely short poem about undying love, even for a partner with dementia. I especially love the last two lines. I think the 1st and 2nd line would work better if you could write them more from the perspective of the partner's perceptions....something like "If you see me as a stranger"......
Also, line 6 doesn't really need the word "by" and I think it would be a better repeat without it.

I know I saw a powerful movie about Alzheimer's years ago, but I don't remember the title. I'm hoping that your wife doesn't suffer from this dreadful disease. You did a good job with this poem and I enjoyed reading it. Best regards, Lilly

No she does not at present. We are both in our 70s and we do occasionally forget some things, we usually are able to recall them later.

The loss of one loved is a sorrow but having them relieved of Alzheimer or dementia is a blessing. Hopefully, the faith we will be renewed whole with no aches is gladness, and if we are wrong and there is no hereafter, at least our bodies will replenish this earth.

You are absolutely correct. Thankfully I do believe in the Bible and it is a promise from God that there will be a resurrection of the dead and a gradual restoration of physical and mental perfection. I long for the day.

'The Curse & The Promise', is an exceptionally well-written and heart-wrenching piece. With a minimum of words this talented poet has told it as it is. I look forward to seeing your next post.

I love it. That's me and my wife all the way. We are true pull-aparts and you have transmitted that "deeper" understanding between two individuals with your well-placed words.
Thanks for this soothing interlude.
Good job

nomi,
The picture 'speaks a thousand words' and the words touch my heart - could be my mum who was taken by Alzheimers, and my dad who was her carer. So the promise is not broken when the curse sneaks in - slowly, stealthily, determinedly. And no real answers after that last breath. While your life goes on, a part of you remains tied to the one who died - the one to whom you made an undying promise.

Exactly. Thank you for getting it. Somewhat surprisingly, all of my reviewers so far have gotten it.

Hi Nolan, one of my favorite movies...
I can't even say how many times I have
seen it...but I love the ending...
my mother was going into the late stages
of dementia...I think they are a lot alike...
my mother couldn't remember so many things...
and it would upset her...when my father passed...
everything she lived for passed..they were married 64 years...
I love your poem my sweet friend...and your picture is perfect...very nicely written...love Linda xxoo

Thank you so much. Your parents were married longer than many people live who live into old age. What a blessing that was.
-
your right Nolan...I was blessed to have them
the better part of my life...but it's hard not having them here now...sigh...
your so very welcome sweet guy...God Bless...love xxoo

What a sensitive poem, and one that hits way too close to home, as my father passed from (among other things) complications from Alzheimer's, with my mother at his side, and my father-in-law is staying by the side of his hospitalized wife, who's in the first stages of mental decline. Your poem is beautifully written and, as you can tell, very relatable.

Thank you very much. After viewing the Note Book for about the third or fourth time, the poem just wrote itself in my mind. I did not even have to rush to write it down, it was etched in my mind.

I know what you mean about a poem writing itself. The ease with which it reads reflects the ease with which it was written.
-
hank you. Most do not come that easily for me.

Just be glad this one did!
