I have seen that on TV a long time ago, but thought it was a thriller. You made and excellent story out of it here. If it can happen it is an intriguing phenomena.

Susan,
Charles Dickens used spontaneous combustion in his novel, Bleak House. I enjoyed this read and found nothing to criticize.

Hi Dave! That's another book I need to read! I started it years ago and had to return it to the library before I finished it. It was when I was in high school. Thanks for reading my odd story Dave! Susan

What a horrible way to die! I'm glad it's a rare occurrence. Love the image: space of her apartment gnawed on her nerves. You succeed in increasing the horror by contrasting it with the lovely dream Mrs. Long is having before being consumed by flames.

How on earth did you come up with this story !?
The ending freaked me out. I could see the police trying to fill out the incident report! Creepy good writing. :-)

The condition is called the wick effect. The body fact acts like the wick of a candle. I did not know that there have been cases of people surviving this. Great story and yes, you did make my skin crawl with this one.

Yuck! I mean that in the best way. Gross, but entertaining story. Just when you were making me connect and feel sorry for this woman, you burned her up.
And she looked forward to the dreams - just my opinion, but this sentence sounds a little awkward with the 'And' at the beginning. I would delete it and let the rest stand on its own.

Spontaneous combustion
Most heated destruction
of Loretta Long's body
One too many toddies
Or dream sparked a living flame
too hot for one to tame
I still have me wits about me or do I? Well done, Buck
