This is very sad. The reference to voices and pretend make me think of my sons schizophrenia. Why do people have to suffer so? Not they realize it most of the time...lost in their own worlds. This poem really touched me.

Very powerful poetry. You paint a picture of Mary that is very real. These poor souls find their pretend life much better than reality. Not so hard to understand at all. Not all of us come from a cookie cutter labeled "normal", and you have written this in words for us.

This well-written, descriptive poem provides a moving look at a day in the life of
a homeless person--pushing one or more shopping carts that contain EVERYTHING
he/she owns! And, yes, many of them do have mental issues. Typo "proabably"

Hello Author, What a sad story you have penned here... with a moment of happiness in it. A focus on a part of our population that isn't in my area, though I do live on the ocean. I guess I live on the wrong part of the coast.

This is a very well written story in a poem you have penned. I love the title and where you said not all that is is cracked up to be. You used a very good picture to go with your words. Best wishes in the contest. Blessings, Teri

Such a precious write (with a unique style that really works so well for your topic!!) about Mary...a homeless person that apparently resides in a beach-front town. You've got some great rhymes to describe not only her physical appearance and 'stuff she treasures' but also her general psychological thought processes... a wonderful offering for the contest! Mary's Story! ;);) Thank you for sharing and best of luck at the polls! ;)

Thanks for writing, I enjoyed reading your post. The part about her cart being surrounded by 2 others was a little confusing, was someone stealing her stuff? You did portray her as a little challenged so I understand that part, I get that maybe its all in her head. Then you state, she remembers her life is trashed. (In and out of mental state's?)
So she is not challenged? I dun no it just was a little confusing. But then again maybe that's what you wanted me to think. If so disregard my post. And remember I am no pro and that's just my opinion, take it with a grain of salt. Thank you

This prose poem is both poignant and disquieting. It evokes sympathy for Mary while also commenting on the sad plight of people like her who live with all their belongings in a cart. We hope she's lucid not just periodically. An interesting format chosen with breaks that make the reader really focus on Mary.

Hi Mystery Author,
Awwww... The poor dear.
This is very well written and an exceptional contest entry. You point up the shameful disgrace of our many mentally ill, homeless folks.
Nothing for me to suggest improoving upon.

Yes, that's often the case. I worked with a similar population for some years. It's really shameful that there is nowhere for them to be housed, appropriately medicated, fed, and cared for. All because it costs too much, but the excuse was their "rights" (to be dumped out onto the streets!). Sickening.
