    Cookie,

It's funny how we remember so many little things when we lose someone we love. Smiles, Carol

I think you have the beginnings of a good novel here. This first chapter holds much promise and could travel in one or two ways towards sheer romanticism or a more melodramatic situation. Well done and good luck in the contest.

    Treasuregirl,

Not quite sure where it might lead, but you are right there are many different avenues to follow. Thanks so much..Carol

Carol, what a wonderful story. So sad, so poignant, and then a little girl brings her mother around to thinking that perhaps, maybe, life may not be so bad.
The dialogue was exquisite, the interaction between mother and daughter so sweet. Mothers weariness and slight impatience at times so realistic. A great and uplifting story, Carol. I wish you luck in the contest, and warmest regards, Marijke

    Marijke,

Thank you so much. I hoped the little girl's charm would win the reader over and Mom too. Thank you for the awesome review and the blessing of stars. Smiles, Carol

I like the implied hope of reconciliation, or a better relationship, between the woman and her father that is implied by the incident of the shoes on the wrong feet. Best wishes, Jeanie Mercer

Begin Again,

A truly beautiful, tender little bit of fiction. I liked the shoes-on-the-wrong-feet part. I chuckled along with Katie and her mom. Well done and good luck. You may want to consider editing this one item:

I had things to be done

might be better as:

I had things to do

This sounds like a novel with lots of dramatic possibilities as this woman sets out on a whole new life where there is the potential for new relationships, working out old relationships - you have me hoping you're actually writing a second chapter. I like the characters, the situation. Brooke
