I love this and feel that it truly reflects the value of competition. I am reminded of a quote from Dead Poet's society: "sport (competitiond) is actually a
chance for us to have other human beings
push us to excel. You have told of a personal defeat but how you pushed on seeking for first place.

hello
a good entry for the free verse competition on competition.
Ah the runners dilema ...personal best is only as good as that blue ribbon...
the burn of needing to be first.

A very well-written free verse poem about being competitive and work to win the first place, sometimes it is not possible and we ended up second, but we know we tried hard and did our best.

Sandra, true that to "Place" is a wonderful accomplishment, however those that come in second or third -- Do thirst for the GOLD
Comment from Boogienights
This was an exciting poem from start to finish! Wonderfully descriptive, I could feel everything those runners were going through, like I was a part of it. It's great to be first, but second place isn't bad either. Best of luck in the contest.

Very interesting poem indeed! We are all in the rat race in real life. I have realized that winning is not always about coming first. It is about how I ran the race. Good luck! Merry Christmas!

Seshadri, thank you, and the best blessings to you and yours this Christmas.

This is a really excellent poem describing a competitive race! You did such a great job of describing the details of the race itself -- The tape in sight,
every muscle is taut, the runners' last gasps burn like a hand in a flame," for example, that I felt like I was in the race, too!
Thank you for sharing and good luck in the contest!

Susan, thank you, I do love the free verse form of poetry.

Yours is a free verse poem filled with hard-fought images; not just sight images (which are too heavily relied upon generally I think) but a lot of great sound images as well.
My very favorite image is:
"the runners' last gasps
burn like a hand in a flame"
The fortitude, assurance and committment of the runner are stunning:
"A first place finish
is just a matter of when!"
This poem may win first place, the first time out. Good luck.

Wow, what a trip. I've never read a poem that tackled this subject. Many cheers for that all be. The poem developed amazingly. I truly enjoyed this one. Seconds good but I guess first is better.

In my younger years I was an athletics competitor and here you have captured the thrill of the race... the tortured lungs and pumping legs... the desire to be in first place... the training.
The distance in your poem seems a bit odd - you mention completing the first 500 meters - what distance is the race over? A lap of a track is 400 meters.

My event was 1500 middle distance , I see where that might confuse someone.
