Very interesting story, Lisa May. There's a cartoon in the US - one of those cartoons that operates on two levels, for children and adults - called "Phineas and Ferb," and one of the main characters is a platypus. Yes, that does make sense in context if you watch the show (which I do). It's made me interested in platypuses (which, I understand, is the correct plural), and it fascinated me to hear of an in person encounter. It's sad that the one you found was dead, but I'm glad you got to see a live one in the sanctuary.
As usual, you told your story well, with the proper amount of detail, and lots of information about a creature with whom few people are familiar. You know I proofread and, again, you've left me nothing to correct. If I were doing that for a living, you would put me out of business! Congratulations on your well-deserved contest win.

Dear Nature-Lover,
*smile* Well, now you've gone and done it. Rats. As I've been reading through these entries, I thought I had picked out the one to earn my vote. I was keeping THAT one in mind as I read through all the rest. But, oh, no. Here you come with your really well-written, engaging, and totally surprising story. And grabbed that vote away from the other writer. haha
A note:
I hoped to see a Platypus in its natural habitat.
--> no need to cap 'platypus'
I still have a couple more to read - but I think it will be really hard to beat this piece. Thanks so much and good luck!

Thanks so much for your supportive review, Robyn.
I initially put the cap 'P' in platypus to make the animal's name stand out more, but you are right, it shouldn't be there.

What a great picture and write here of the creature you so desired to see. I love the story and the picture as well. I am so glad that these animals are being protected.

Thanks for reviewing. They are unique in the world and it would be terrible if they went extinct.

Oh, that's so sad. I guess they do live and die like all creatures but it's so sad that your first encounter with the platypus was with a dead one. Thanks for all the great information!

I remember how upset it made me feel. I knew they were rare and it felt such a tragedy.

Oh no, the ending is so sad. You must have been devastated to have found it that way. But, your story is very well written, with a good combination of facts and information plus story line. I hope you do well in the contest. Best of luck.

Well, you've got one over me, I've never even seen one in a captive environment, never mind in the wild. I'm pretty sure our friends in America, England and Europe will be interested in your well written Post. Well done, blessings Roy

A very well written story of an unusual creature. Sad ending. I was not aware of this creature at all till now. Glad to read the story and learn something new for the day. Thanks for sharing. Good luck!

What a sad but well written story. I assume the picture that you included is one you took on your trip. I did not realize they were an endangered species and that they were hunted for their fur. Thanks for the history lesson. Great story.

I very much enjoyed your story although I was so sad that the platypus was dead. Yes, I also hope that it did not suffer. We have lost so many of our native animals, particularly in last summer's bush fire season. Nature's creatures truly are amazing, so diverse, so beautiful. Best wishes for the contest.
