Thank you very much, Pome Lover, for your excellent review of my poem, and for all your thoughtful comments. I recently watched part of the movie (recorded part of it, too) -- my mother called me, in a very nostalgic mood about younger days... so when I saw the prompt for this contest, it was fresh in my mind. Yes, sweet memories.
I googled free images of the Austrian countryside for the picture, but I had to find one that was just right. Wouldn't it be nice to be like a kid again, running and singing through those beautiful hills? It's breathtaking! Wishing you a blessed Christmas.

I gave 5 stars for fulfilling the syllable count correctly. However the last line was weak, in my opinion. Since you did not mention the name of the movie in the title, why not use it as the last line - the sound of music (5 syllables). You could also use "their" instead of "the".

Thank you, Fayesh, for your excellent review and for the five stars. I didn't use the title of the movie anywhere, because I felt it would have been too obvious. The last line, "Over living hills," was a nod to a line in one of the movie's best loved songs, "The hills are alive, with the sound of music..."

Thank you very much for your excellent and honest review. I didn't know that there was an actual von Trapp family, never mind a real escape story to verify! I thought the entire thing was fictional, intended to call attention to the plight of others who may have had to escape under clandestine conditions. I do believe my "review" is true to the movie, however, which is possibly what you mean by your statement, "It flies" -- unless you like the poetry, or both. Wishing you blessings.

Dear Fantasist, although I clearly don't know their whole story yet, I have certainly learned a lot this morning (I'm up late, and now it's Thursday, technically Christmas Eve). After all these decades of not even knowing they were a real family, now I have just learned that they have a whole other, fascinating story just waiting to be discovered...they came to the United States? I don't know if that was their intention in the movie, or if they had some other ultimate plan. Thank you for your kind wishes, and for enlightening me; I will certainly follow up. There are so many accounts of refugees escaping from autocratic states. In the wake of WWII, the refugees from the NAZI Final Solution are the most heart-wrenching. The anti-German reaction in the states where the ethnic Germans supported the NAZI takeover of their governments resulted in massive deportations to Germany, already divided into Russian and Western armed forces. In the west, the German government forced the West Germans to board these deportees in an emergency measure that strained the Allied occupying forces resources. Stalin reacted to ethnic groups within the Soviet Union by internal deportation. This was particularly difficult for the ethnic Germans, known as the "Volga Germans" who came to Russia under the auspices of the German-born princess who became Catherine the Great. When Germany invaded Russia in June 1941, the internal security forces literally drove these people from their homes without warning, loaded them into cattle cars and dumped them in a far reach of Siberia without food or shelter. They perished by the thousands. Curiously, the multi-language popular German Schlager-singer, Helene Fischer, is an ethnic German descendent of one of those families. Thank you for the amazing historical information that I've never heard before -- although I have to admit that if one had given it some thought, it might not be impossible to predict some of those outcomes. It's very unfortunate that human nature often seems incapable of making finer distinctions in responding to perceived threats, leading to wholesale contempt for, and destruction of innocent life, or "collateral damage" as it has sometimes been called. Unfortunately, little has changed in the way we respond to people we see as different, and we often see some groups as a threat to our way of life -- regardless of whether that's actually true.
The treatment of the Volga Germans was heartless and horrendous! Thank you, again, for enlightening me. God bless you.
