I was sad to read of your upbringing because it was my mother who believed that the only was to deal with kids was to beat the h#$% out of them. I wish I could look back and have something positive to say about her. The only thing I can say I got from it is that crabby old people don't bother me as much as they do others. I have yet to meet anyone meaner than my mother. Your perspective has given me something to think about. ,I like your clever title.

I've lost both my parents in the same year, six months apart. My heart still breaks when I think of my Mom, but not so much my Dad. I showed him respect as I grew older, but I never felt any love there. I'm sorry that you and others like yourself had to face the same destructive behavior. Sending you a smile and blessings for a better day.

Your notes confirmed my thought that there is a little bit of bio in this fiction. This is good example of flash-fiction. Not just 80 words, but 80 meaningful words. You have a good chance in this contest.

Tiny thing, probably a typo. I think you need an apostrophe. -- The ground's too hard.

Thank you Susan for reading and commenting on my contest entry. It's difficult at times to look back and remember things you would rather simply forget, but those same things form the person we become. Smiles and blessings to you!

Sad and powerful flash fiction story. I am a generation younger, but my father had the same attitude. He always said, "I can't means I don't want to."

If I may, I think you may have a typo in the first paragraph:
"headed" should be "heeded"?

Well done. Hugs and blessings.

Good morning, Leann. It is so kind of your to read and comment on my contest entry. I truly appreciate it! My father would never give praise (though my mom always said he was proud of me). He didn't approve in later years of how I raised my children. Thanks for the catch on the typo....Smiles and hoping for a blessed day!

This Flash Fiction (though listed as a Non-Fiction) speaks your life story, you failed to carry out your father's words as exclusive order, your mom couldn't help you from your authoritarian father whose lessons make you a successful person today; well said, well done; thanks for sharing this. The flash story was craftly written with out difficulties in conveying the message therein. Throughout history, fathers have been known to be very strict and tough in raising their children, while tenderness have been attributed to the mothers. Things seem to be changing these days. Good luck in the contest!

Yes, I raised my children completely different and my father never understood it. He's passed now and left an unforgiving mark on my children that I hope some day they will come to understand. Thank you for reading and commenting. Have a blessed day!

It is good that you have taken the best things from your childhood and ran with them. My Father was also strict and used violence to control the household. I learned to be strong and know when someone was in the wrong and to bide your time to return the balance of power, I learned to rely on myself and gain inner strength for the battle and not to succumb to tears. I brought my children up very differently and gave them my love and support. Your story is hard hitting and sad, but as you say, your upbringing succeeded in making you strong, much enjoyed, love Dollyx

Dolly - Thank you for the awesome review and the sparkling stars. I see that our worlds have been on similar paths as we grew up and then had our own families. I too raised my children totally different - something my father was never able to understand or accept. Thank you again! Smiles and best wishes for a great day!

My Father never owned up to his behaviour and got off scot free, but it is all in the past now and I have forgiven him. His Mother beat him and he joined the Navy at a young age to escape her, your write is well deserving of a six, love Dolly x
