I love draught horses, so I found the illustration very appealing. But that was only a small amount of the pleasure - when I read your lovely sonnet it put me in a good mood of appreciating your skill. There are some wonderful lines (such as: I yearn to see what toil and God's plan yields; and: Tomorrow I shall freckle furrows made with hand-dropped seeds). Your descriptions are fresh, and the gripping sense of anxious anticipation adds drama at the end.

Hi, Lisa. I really appreciate your taking the time to comment at length about my sonnet. I am especially pleased you enjoyed the lines and descriptions. This sonnet was a pleasure to write because I admire farmers so much. Rod

I've noticed that in the things you write.

I like this. It does a great job of conveying the work of preparing the fields and hoping for a good harvest. One thing to look at might be the line "wind-sown weed that's crass" because it's a bit awkward though I realized you were trying to get the rhyme. Good luck with the contest!

Good eye, Jill. You caught the line that gave me the most trouble. Many thanks for your kind praise of my sonnet.

I love this presentation filled with nostalgia as well as the truth that hard work brings the promise of hard earned pleasure and harvest in the end. All the best to you.

I am so pleased you enjoyed my nostalgic glimpse of farming. Indeed, before tractors, these farmers really had to work hard to put in a crop. Many thanks for sharing. Rod

Very beautiful, and well conceived sonnet. The image is lovely and one can feel the pleasure of spring for both animals and humans, as the sowing begins, and then the wait for results. Good wishes.

You are the first to comment about how the ANIMALS might have enjoyed the pleasure of plowing even though it was work. Many thanks for sharing my sonnet and your kind praise. Rod

Elegant and powerful--stunning imagery--flawless flow and fine rhyme-- one word that stands out as ill-chosen--crass--don't see how it can be construed to apply in this context.

I truly appreciate your high praise of my sonnet and your close eye. Yes, that word (and its line) caused me the most trouble. But that kind of weed that fills the fields is indeed "crass" (worse than crab grass). Rod

Your iambic pentameter is just perfect and the rhymes are creative and exact. You've crafted a great sonnet for this contest and the theme is also perfect for the season of approaching spring. I think this will do well in the contest. Best of luck to you. MM

One of the best composed sonnets that I have read in a while. The image works well with you poem. The individual farmer is almost extinct, a part of the past.

Dear Author, your love of the earth and the fruit that it bears, pours off the page in well-placed rhymes.
Your faith in the Almighty only adds to the appeal of this poem, at least for me.

An excellent tribute to farmers everywhere. Their life is often one of stomach-burning as they wait to see if the seedlings will sprout.

Well done.

Blessings
Janet

I grew up in farm country and while my family were not farmers, we witnessed their lives and hardships.

This work has reached the exceptional level

-I like the image very much,
and the nice presentation,
as well as the tribute.
-You did a very good job
with your sonnet.
-Effective meter and rhyme.
-You set the scene very well
in the first two verses.
-You show what the farmer
needs to do to achieve success
with his crop in verse three;
there are no guarantees.
-The concluding couplet
follows up on that theme very well.
-A very good entry; good luck.
