Hi Jim. I realize this is free verse but I do have one suggestion, if I may for this wonderfully colorful poetry:
Change this: "........would doff his dust covered felt hat and......
To this" doffed his dust covered felt hat and...."

Dear JLR, What a wonderful tribute this poem is, to the grandfather that you admired so much.
Even after the decades that have passed since you buried that man, the words that you have written hold all the emotion that you must have been feeling then.

It is grand when we read something and the message comes through loud and clear, as in this poem about a lovely man who was your grandfather. We have in common, that we were both eighteen when our grandfathers died and that they were non-complaining productive and kind men. Nicely done.

Isn't it marvellous to ha a true hero, and I'm not talking about the one who is brave on the battle field, but is not scared of life in general, who knows his God is by his side, and cares not about the world abroad? I was touched by the development of this piece as it expresses that sense of respect and humbleness to the very end. You brought out the essence of the grandfather vividly using both actions and phrases. I love how it ends as well, so fitting and loving. Beautiful

What a wonderful tribute to your grandfather. He sounds like the kind of man that would make anyone proud to have as their own. We could sure use some more men like him around today. I see that you're an older man yourself, presumably a grandfather as well. I hope that your grand kids will be able to provide such a tribute. I suspect that they will. It gives me something to shoot for as well. Great job. Well done.

Tom, we are all given the gifts to pass along and I do hope that among my eight grandchildren, I do set the examples I was given as a lasting legac.
