In my opinion, your first free verse poem warrants an 'Exceptional' rating to say the least, for its fluid movement, subject and tribute to the veteran community, including you and my brother, who served in the marine corps in Vietnam. I would only change one word, for grammatical cause, the first line, the fourth word, 'and' to 'I' - best wishes in the contest with this amazing write...

First, thank you for your service to the country and her people. "It's just a hat" was a rude and thoughtless thing to say, I wonder if this comment was made by the younger generation who seems to lack understanding and respect for sacrifices made. God Bless you!

First of all, your sense of duty and pride is admirable, and we all thank you for putting your life on the line for us. What would we do without the brave boys and men who have given everything to protect our beliefs and keep our country safe.
It's hard to believe that this is your first free verse poem...you did an excellent job. Building a story-line around the hat, a great source of pride, was ingenious, and you spoke your truth eloquently. I loved it.

When I joined the Air Force in 1960, I was just a punk kid looking to get away from home for awhile. By the time of my honorable discharge in 1964, I was a man who fully understood what it meant to be a member of our nation's military. I have benefitted from the discipline I learned among the many other life lessons. All these many years later, people come up to me and ask if I was ever in the military, when I tell them that I was, they often say, I can tell by the way you walk and stand. That makes me so proud. Thank you for posting this great piece.

First of all, thank you for your service. Your anger at him is righteous anger. To take something such as service in such a blase way is disrespectful to everyone who served and all families who lost someone in a war. A better answer for him woud be, I didn't serve but I wear it honor of all those who did.

Many of my husband's family members suffered greatly in the conflict of 1939 - 1945. ( He's British)
I don't know if that day will ever come. But I look forward to a time when wars will cease and young men and women will no longer have to pay the ultimate sacrifice for their countries.
