What an excellent entry for this Memorial Day contest! You've so eloquently described what it means to serve in the military and contrasted it with the lack of understanding and respect that some people have for those who serve. Thank you for reminding us of the importance of remembing and honoring our active duty and veteran personnel!
Thank you for sharing,
Susan

Great entry for the ~ Memorial Day USA ~ writing prompt contest.

I like this metaphor...
"He should know every veteran wrote a blank check payable to the United States,"

adding a number to the veteran soldiers lives lost is more effective ...1,303,684 it's awful. I'm happy you're alive.

Well done!

I think your little tale here reveals how much society takes veterans for granted nowadays. The low level police action kind of military involvement lately doesn't grab the news media's attention, and it has been so long since Vietnam and WW II that the present generation has no real connection to these events. It was a more patriotic era in the time of the greatest generation. Every Memorial Day, I think of my uncles and their time in the navy and the army. Its not just a day for a barbecue. We used to go down to the Intrepid aerospace museum on Fleet Week in NYC. Or watch the air show over Jones Beach. Something to remember the military. estory

Your hat is not just a hat, and your poem is not just a poem, just as you are not just another Poet, I for one would like to thank you, for being who you are, and for wearing what your hat stood for.

Wow, what a great poem, Earle! Obviously heartfelt, so can I assume this was based on a personal experience of yours? If so, then I thank you for your service. Your poem reads so easily and every line is a winner. I've never written a free verse poem, but if I did I couldn't imagine writing one half as thoughtful and well written as this one. Congratulations and 6 stars all the way!

"It's Not Just a Hat" is a beautiful tribute to those who have served or are serving still. Your love and passion for our nation comes shining through.

Very well written Earl.

Great entry for the contest. You have penned it with a lot of fervour and intensity. People who are in the services are heroes who have given his or her life to something bigger than oneself. We must always remember and honour our true heroes. Good luck in the contest!

That makes me so upset - no one but vets should wear the hat - ever...my fiance laid down his life in Vietnam...just a hat curdles my toes and you wrote this most excellently... Don't wear it if you have no respect!

What a wonderful poem and an amazing dedication, Earl. I fully agree that it is NOT just a hat and I also agree that those who do not have the honor of wearing one, should definitely not. There was indeed a price to pay. Very well done, very much enjoyed, blessings.

Earl, This is very beautiful and very true poem you have penned about the hat and what it stands for to the ones who wear it. My husband is a veteran, but the only hat he wears is a straw hat for when he is in the garden. May God bless you my friend and thank you for your sacrifices. Teri
