I recall reviewing the shorter version of this. Your slightly longer account here is even more emphatic in the way you explain the significance of the hat. Well written.

I really enjoyed reading this flash fiction. I expect this story is true and I really feel for you. It must have been so hurtful when the guy said, " just a hat". Best of luck in the competition. Jen.

I reviewed this as a free verse poem. Congratulations on that win. I'm so thrilled to see you were able to rewrite it as prose. It's a story that needs to be repeated.

And amen to that. I can understand if you felt offended. But then again, a lot of people out there may not see it that way or even give it a second thought. They take it for granted that someone is fighting for their rights. I can understand why you felt offended and are angry. Good luck in the contest. Ulla:)))

This is a great story, well-told. I can appreciate your feeling of being insulted when the fellow wearing the hat had no clue of it's meaning. I often wonder about other hats, and jackets, that have other associations on them, that can be bought anywhere, by anyone. They lose their meaning.

Good luck in the contest.

Your contest entry speaks volumes of today's society. I served as an Army wife for 23 years. Our oldest son is just retiring after 25 years. Yes, it's more than just a hat. God Bless you. Good luck with the contest.

I am a little stunned by that guy's words. I have to admit that I am not much of a flag-waver, but on Memorial Day, I put a flag on my Dad's grave for the service he gave on D-Day and flowers for my grandmother as a Gold Star Mother for losing her youngest son in France. That hat is not worn as a free meal ticket, it is a symbol of the respect that those who wore the uniform deserve, and the hat is not only worn by those proud of their own service, and they wear it in honor of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
Good luck in the contest.
Take care,
Mary

Thank you for sharing this story. I can understand why those words, "it's just a hat" would bother you. You wear the hat in remembrance of the price you were willing to pay for your country. It doesn't seem right that anyone would wear one when it didn't mean anything to them.

"It's just a hat." I'm not even a veteran and those words hurt me. Wow, you ex-military guys take discipline and self-control to a whole new level. The fact that you didn't curse this guy out shows once a disciplined soldier always a disciplined soldier. Good for you, soldier. God bless you!

This is an excellent submission for the Short Story contest. Too many people take their freedoms for granted and never think about all those who never came home. I think one reason is because the mainland has never been invaded. We haven't known war on our soil since the Civil War, and the North experienced it at a distance. As the wife of a veteran, I thank you for your service and for reminding others who the ultimate heroes are, though I consider that some who did make it home were also heroes.
