This is a great little story Bill. I think it is perhaps the post of yours that I have enjoyed reading the most. Certainly it has all the elements of exquisite Flash Fiction - I salute you !

A sad twist at the end. You crafted your story with skill and care, leading into the last sentence very well. This is an excellent entry for the Flash Fiction contest, so sending my best wishes.

I guess that you can say that some trips home are inevitable. You can either return to the scene of the crime or be returned involuntarily. There will undoubtedly be tears, tales and at the very end TAPS.

Sad but meaningful. It seems like he returned home but not alive. Hopefully, he kept in touch so they have lots to share at the memorial. Best wishes in the contest.

This is an eerie story Bill and you sent shivers down my spine with your tale of the return here. At least this guy lived life to the full before his end, love Dolly x

Oh so sad. You did a great job with this poignant contest entry. Your words are well thought out and create a great picture for readers. The ending is unexpected and heartbreaking, too.
Best wishes in the contest.

My mind has many theories, did he atone for his past by joining the military and gave his life, or was he captured because of his past, hearse or paddy wagon? very well written and best wishes for your contest****kahpot

Our mystery character is clearly in a state of contemplation after having what we know must have been a very checkered life! Good use of limited words!

Omigosh! The vehicle was a hearse, wasn't it? That's why he's returning after all those years. How sad there was no one to see him off and no on to greet him when he arrived.
