Thank you for sharing your contest entry with us. I love to sit and listen to stories the elderly has to share. We can learn a lot from them. Today's children are missing a lot of heritage by not putting away their electronics and listening. Good luck.

Thanks for reviewing the poem Barbara. Yes I had a great storyteller in my family and it was always a delight to listen to him. Hopefully I will get to tell my grandchildren lots of stories ( with embellishment).
    Have a good day

This is some great imagery! I could even be that old man...except for the smoking...and maybe the wisdom. My needs are simple and fairly cheap. I do think at this point, embellishment is a virtue. It hit home. Well done.

Terry, thanks for taking the time to review my poem. Yes I agree that embellishment is a virtue. Some of my not too kind friends call it bullshit (hope you are not offended ) .Have a great day.

Your poem is exceptional in every respect--skillfully and creatively composed, appealingly descriptive, touching--a wonderful blend of lyrical and narrative elements.

You have painted a fine portrait of a storyteller with flowing words. No story will live unless there is somebody to listen to. The purpose of a storyteller is not to tell you how to think, but to give you questions to think upon. Much enjoyed. Good luck!

A beautiful portrait of the storyteller created here with his readiness to share his life experiences if anyone is ready to listen -listening is an art we seem to be losing ! very enjoyable read

Thanks for taking the time to review my poem. Also your six star rating is awesome. You are correct that listening is an art we are losing. It is indeed one of the most important skills we really need to make sense out of a lot of things. Cheers and take care

Oh, I have known fellows like this from my days working in Hospice. You are right - we tell our stories so the clouds will remember us, and there is peace in recalling our earthly days. This is a very fine poem indeed.

What a lovely poem and well worth a read, I really enjoyed this as I am reaching the age when I have many tales to tell and all I need is someone who will spend time and listen. When I do find someone it is difficult for me to stop so I try to control myself so I don't bore them. Kooky.

Thanks for taking the time to review my poem. The time factor is so under pressure these days. In my younger days there was so much more time for listening to storytellers. Like your site name. Take Care.

This poem makes me think of something I ponder more and more as I finally accept that I am growing older. Were the old days really intrinsically better? or was it just that back then we had more energy and enthusiasm to enjoy things more?

We tend to reminisce in old age as we think our yesteryears are better than our present and future. This is sad, but if we can remember the good times then our brains are still working! I enjoyed your end rhymes here, love Dolly x

This is a lovely poem, and I can picture the old storyteller, sitting on a porch, or under that tree, narrating from the past to an audience of one, or a group of ten. It works much better in a rustic setting than in an urban one, although on some city streets, older folks feel safe in the company of people they know. This poem could even be set to music, and performed on guitar, in the tradition of the old folk singers, if you had a good melody for it.
I especially like your last line, that he "dreams of better days."

Mary, thanks for taking the time to review my poem.I like your idea of turning it into a song/poem with musical backing. .Might explore that a bit more. Have a great day and thanks again.
