I loved this story and just thought how wonderful the bond between the pair as they both grew older. Then when told that Grandma was a dog it brought a lump to my throat and a tear to my eye such a lovely story, thanks for sharing and congratulations. Kooky

Now this is a real story - so pleased for you that it won so impressivley. It is well told; the empathy is beautiful; the childish rituals are described with warmth. I felt it was the family dog when the train tracks were being built - I did that as well when I was little with our family's black labrador Bessie - my equivalent grandma. Your Honey sounded very special.

This is a great entry for the Family Story (fiction) writing prompt. I never saw the twist at the end coming, and yet it was only to be expected I guess. No human could be that patient and tolerant all the time.

Lol! Thank you for your delightful review. Greatly appreciated. Honey was a rescue dog, nearly twelve when we got her, and she was so patient, and gentle - and regal, like a grand old lady.

What a sweet little girl. The picture matches the story and it's a beautiful one. It's too bad that there are few homes with multi-generational families in them these days. But then, Grandma was the dog? That was a shock. Well done. Good luck in the contest.

Thank you so much for the lovely review. Much appreciated. Yes "Grandma" was the very old rescue dog who came to us when she was twelve, who walked and acted like a very regal old lady!

Wendy,

hahahaha You wicked wretch. You had me from the very first line. As a grandma, myself, I could see all of this playing out - all the fun times and memory-making moments. I AM really glad that sweet Charlotte did not have to deal with the death of a real grandma at such an early age - but the photo album was a great idea.

Super duper piece. I have read all the entries now and you have earned my vote! Good luck!

I do understand how a dog and a child can bond. We had a yellow Labrador, Codi. There was only 2 boys when we got Codi, but the family grew and she accepted each new child with all the patience of a true Nanny. Thank you for sharing this writing writing prompt entry with us.

Did I mention yet that Grandma was our dog Honey? (comma needed after 'dog')

The twist in the tail at the end of the tale turns this into something more than a tale of grandparents into the tale of a tail and I thought it was clever and delightful. great fun.

Thank you very much Jim. A lovely (and clever!) review.
Honey was a rescue dog, mostly Golden Labrador, came to us at twelve. She always carried herself like a grand old lady.
