This line makes me think of one of the quotes from The Little Prince: "Responsible I was for you, I watered you each day." This is the quote: 'You Become Responsible, Forever, for What You Have Tamed'. Tamed can be used with several meanings. So many plants remind of one who has passed. So the plant dying is a disconnection even further and a complicated grieving.

Ferns are gorgeous flowers. I wouldn't want it to die either. My relative had a plant stand that held a huge fern. It did not look or die like the poem's image; but if you touched the leaves, that was a no, no. They said the leaves would turn brown.

    I didn't know that! Interesting....I wish I had my moms ability with plants and flowers. Thank you so much for reading my poem. :)

A very lovely poem here, with a sentimental attachment to the plant, thoughts of the mother, and a genuine concern for the plant's well-being. It is combined into a poem with smooth rhyme and metre, and it is beautifully presented. best wishes for your entry.

I read your poem hoping for the insight to why I don't do well with ferns. Immediately I think I will stop watering so much and move mine to the sun and hope it's not the beginning of the end. Good job.

Hello, my friend,

Excellent entry for the Dying Houseplant writing prompt contest. It's sad. It reminded me of the little shop of horrors. You followed the contest rules well. I like the presentation and imagery too. Good luck in the contest.

We'll have to have a service in a few weeks, I can tell. You've got me really feeling sorry for this plant. I mean you even have a name for it. This should do quite well in the contest.

I can easily relate to the Speaker in this poem who has befriended and personified a dying fern. Your plea is poignant because "Franny" reminds you of your green-thumbed mother. I have a garden of ferns OUTSIDE, but find even Boston ferns don't do well inside because my house is too dry. They love humidity. Try letting her dry out between thorough watering and MIST her daily.

    Thank you for the advice, I'm terrible with plants. When I met my future husband, he was going on vacation with his family (mom and sister). They asked me to take care of the plants they had when they were gone, but apparently I over watered them and killed them all! We got married anyway..lol. Thanks again.

It's beautiful this poem with a lovely message to the plant, now 'just like a friend' to hang on for another while and not to die just yet. Family memories are so effectively interlaced into the stanzas - should make it to the winner's enclosure !

Dear Mystery Writer,

From the opening image, you had me. Absolutely. That was awesome. This poor plant is suffering a slow death - even as you beg and plead for him/her to struggle through. I love the fact you bring Mom into it. I do not think Mom would actually be happy here. hahahaha

A single note:
--> Dear (F)rannie, please don't leave me,

Can't imagine a piece beating this one - good luck!
