I enjoyed this story so much as my wife likes house plants and keeps them for a while and when they stop flowering throws them out. I then when I can rescue them and put them in my office and tend to their well being till they bloom again. I then give them back to her. Thanks for sharing. Kooky

    Hi Kooky,
I'm glad you're able to rescue the plants. My oldest daughter has that knack as well. I think they're worth trying to save. Thanks for the review.
    Blessings

This shows why there is an attachment to this plant: "I've long since lost the plastic card that came jammed into the dirt next to your stem. " Along with the dying of the plant, there's a loss of such a close connection to the friend. There's actually subtle grieving going on. One grieving opens another. A plant withering & dying is not as simple a thing as many might assume.

    Hello Liz,
Thanks so much for the kind review and comments. It's true that one level of grieving can lead to another. It takes time to heal when one suffers a loss.
    Have a blessed day gal.

I think many of us can relate to this. When you miss a person terribly, even a plant from that friend becomes very special and must be kept alive. You fulfilled the story prompt perfectly! Well done for winning!!

    Hello Tina,
I appreciate your kind words and review. The plant represents all that was left of that relationship, and while memories are invaluable, having something tangible to hang on to is comforting.
    Have a blessed day.

You did a good job with your contest entry, Mystery author. I like the way you described the plant your friend gifted you, then that friend passed a few years later. I understand how the plant remains a part of her, and you believe if the plant dies so will that memory of her. Your lines read well with great attention to imagery and details.
Best wishes in the contest.
Respectfully, Jan

Thanks so much Jan. I saw the subject matter and didn't know if I could come up with anything, but since there wasn't a word limit, it was easier to do. Thanks for the encouraging comments. I hope you and your family have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

You have given a lot of thought to this poem. I have a plant that I'm nourishing for over a year, too. I don't want it to die either; so here we are talking and watering the plant daily.

Isn't it odd the care we give to objects that we've just purchased or been given? I do love plants though, they add such beauty to our world, and especially when there is snow on the ground outside, it's such a joy to see something green growing. Thanks for the stars and comments.

I absolutely love this story. It may have been true or straight up fiction, but it sounds like something one might go through at the loss of something that represents a someone dear to you.

Good luck in the contest. You got my vote!

Thanks so much Rhonda, your review and comments are greatly appreciated. It's a fiction piece with some degree of truth, in that I speak to all manner of things, living and not. Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Loved this as I can relate to talking to a plant which reminds us of the giver of the plant. I hope you find a place away from a heater or new potting soil to revive the plant. But the piece may not be biographical. In any case, it's well written. Best wishes in the contest!!

Hi, thanks so much for reading and commenting on my story. It's fiction for the most part, though I do love plants and talk to them, but I talk to my screwdriver too, so what does that say about me?

Oh, my - when I read about this contest I couldn't imagine what one would say to a houseplant - though I talk to my vegetables- in-garden- pots all the time. So now I know what someone would say! Very clever and touching - so touching!

Thanks Sherry for the kind review and comments. I wonder Sherry, do you speak to your vegetables before or while you're eating them? I spend a lot of time by myself on the boat in the summer, and talk to the seagulls, the fish I catch, special lures. I'm sure there is some psychological reason for doing it, but I just accept the fact that I'm a little bit nutty.

You are so cute...honey, the vegies I talk to are growing in pots, not cooking... actually there is a sound scientific reason for this- the chlorophyll from your breath is taken in and the tone of your voice, believe it or not, stimulates them...though yelling is not allowed, lol (or maybe I am a lot nutty)

Excuse me for using this space to tell you I am yet to read your post; but that the reason I haven't read it is that you used such a tiny font size that reading it, instead of being pleasurable, was a trial! Do yourself a favor in the eyes of your reader and probably the judges, and increase the font size from 10 to 20. You will probably increase your readership in the process.

Thanks Jay for letting me know. I'm sorry for the inconvenience. I'm not very good at computers, but I'll try to find the font size and correct it. Again, my sincere apologies.

No problem, but it really will make a world of difference. You have to highlight the entire text and in the bar above the post (in the edit mode) you'll see Font Style and Font size. Experiment with 20 first, then go up or down as you need. Let me know when you've done it, and I'll read it.

A very thoughtful post, and a well written one. It is clear why the house plant needs to live, because it is associated with precious memories of your friend. best wishes for your entry.

Thank you Wendy for the kind words and review. How often do we see something in our homes that remind us of loved ones that have passed on. Those things become precious in our sight.
