Cancer is a horrible disease that doesn't key on sex or age or even lifestyle, totally. Mutated cells, for whatever reason, start bumping off other cells, taking away those we love before their time. I'm sorry for yours and everyone's losses. I wish I had a six.

I have a good friend that is dying of cancer and that is what inspired me to write this. Life's a bitch.

I'm sorry about your friend. I have two, first cousins, a brother and a sister dying with cancer. They well be the third and four of my uncle's children who have died with the dreaded disease. I don't think anyone can avoid the pain it spreads across our world. And we are still using the same treatments, although a few newer ones recently, that have been used since the 1940s. It makes me wonder . . .

Beautiful poem! It reminds me of when my mother died when I was just a boy. Although it was over 60 years ago, it left a hole in my life that exists to this day. But God has a way of softening your heart over time. My memories are no longer of the grief we experienced when she was taken, but of the joys she brought us during her shortened stay on this earth -- sweet memories.

I understand your feelings of loss and grief and pain. Some things we do not understand, and life does seem unfair. You expressed it simply and clearly. Sending good wishes for your thoughtful entry.

You have worded your experience, perhaps everyone has the same word to express, why your good friends do leave you, why you get suffer and pain, you do not commit sins, but curse is always there; how and why; and for curse so many lives ruin every day, everywhere; well said, well done; keep writing. This poem about the losses caused by "...the big C" ( cancer, maybe covid) wishes to create an empathy for the pain of loss. The two-beat lines would be better doubled up into four beats; I can't justify this other than by saying it slows the poem down a little and makes it more somber. "The Unmentionable Word" makes direct statements about cancer and the pain of loss it causes. Poetry becomes more individual and distinct when it substitutes concrete examples for abstract statements. For example, in Stanza 1, try "I lost brown-eyed Sara/Eloquent and dear/ Like a warm plum/ when I held her near. Try to replace bare and abstract statements with examples that can be felt by the senses we all possess.
