This contest entry sort of resembled the snow storm that hit Texas last February. Only because Texas is no where close to being prepared for a snow storm. LOL My first full year of teaching, it must have been in February of 1977, we were out of school the entire month because of snow. Anyway, I enjoyed reading your entry. It brought back memories. Good luck.

Thanks. I just happened to remember that particular snowstorm because it was a humdinger.

What a memorable two weeks! I was shocked about the snowflakes on your bedcovers! Did the snow sneak in somehow? But my favorite part was that your friend and brother who had more modern conveniences went to visit you because your family was better off and could handle the lack of electricity better. Best wishes in the contest!

Thank you. Yes, when the wind blew really hard out of the East, fine particles would sift around my window. I did tell dad about it and he put plastic over the window after that storm.

This is a very good story that is well-written and entertaining. What kid doesn't love a snow day? Your family was much bigger than mine but we shared the lifestyle, although we only had two rooms to heat. Good luck in the contest.

Thanks. Our upstairs was unheated as a lot of farmhouses were in those days. We were used to it and I still like a cool room to sleep in today.

Since I as a five year old loaded the coal stove in the morning, I also need a cool room to sleep

Well told.
You need to review the screen to take care of wayward characters. (blast¢?")
I lived in southwest Michigan in the 50's close enough to get the lake effect snow. We had to shovel the drive in the morning for the folks to get out and go to work.

Thanks. Yes the darn word processor well do that sometimes. It's irritating and I have mentioned it to other people when their posts show up with these errors. When you paste it on here the errors don't show on the version the author sees. Oh, well. I will see if it can be fixed.
reply by Wayne Fowler on 10-Jan-2022
I've been able to fix them from 'edit' mode after posting them.

Yep, I have it fixed now. Thanks again.

This is very interesting. I can't remember as a child, being out of school for that long due to snow. It must have been a treat. We did heat with coal so we would've been okay.

I noticed a couple of spots in the last paragraph where the computer gremlin messed up your typing: 1. we kids had a blast¢? 2. play in¢?

Good luck in the contest!

Thanks. Those errors don't show to the one who is posting on here. I have seen the same things in other peoples writings.

    You are welcome.

    I fixed the computer errors.
reply by Mary Shifman on 10-Jan-2022
Good. They happen to me as well. I posted yesterday and saw similar errors so I fixed them and thought I'd gotten them all but someone pointed more out to me so I finally got them all. It happens to everyone no matter how careful we try to be. It's just a glitch, I guess.

Young children usually remember things from childhood that are traumatic in either a fun way or a scary way. Your story sounds like you had fun. I grew up in a big city, so we didn't lose power. We did get to stay home from school, but only for 2 or 3 days. Snow plows cleared the streets as the snow fell. I enjoyed reading your experiences living in the country. Your artwork pairs perfectly. Best wishes in the contest.

The only time I saw snow was in New York in 2010. We spent Christmas and New Year there. The time before that I was a child in Liverpool, England, we left England and emigrated to Australia, but I've been back several times to visit my old home. Beautifully written, I enjoyed your "icecapades" brilliantly done, blessings Roy

Yes, snow days make for great childhood memories. Those were the best. I really like the smooth conversational tone of your story. well done.

notes:

Then the banshee screaming of the wind {lulls} me to sleep.

- lulled

Of course, we kids had a {blastâ?"}no school for over two weeks and all that beautiful snow to build forts and play {inâ?"}a storm to remember.
