Like your post. Children can be apples of my eye. " Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings." -- Psalm 17:8. The phrase, which first was used in the Bible, comes from a Hebrew expression that literally means "little man of the eye," and it refers to the tiny reflection of yourself that you can see in other people's pupils.

Thank you, Rosemary. I appreciate you insightful comments. I didn't know that about the expression. That is good to know.

Yes, absolutely, Beth, children are so easy to influence and mold them to your beliefs. It's so important to teach the most important values at an early age to take with them by as they grow up. I liked your 5-7-5 poem, and good luck. Ulla:)))

Thank you so much Ulla. I 'm glad we agree. I now sure they don't learn more by watch us that they do listening to what we say to them. Children learn best by example.

Now that's the truth! I told my daughter and my oldest granddaughter to watch what they say because it will come back.... they were so sure I was wrong because their children knew what was right and wrong. Well...time proves that knowing doesn't always mean showing!

Well done, Beth

Smiles, Carol

Beth,
You are so right that love is taught jsut as prejudice is. We need to model acceptance of all people to our children.
Good luck in the contest.
Keep writing and stay healthy

You'll get no argument from me on this one, Beth. But sometimes I wonder if our very DNA carries a disposition toward some types of discrimination. While kids are taught socio-economical biases, they instinctively 'target' the runts of the litter, the 'new' kids, those who require glasses or exhibit a speech impediment. I think, perhaps, we're not as evolved as we fool ourselves into believing. Even so, try packing all that into 17 syllables, eh?

Best of luck with the Committee.

Peace, Lee

Thank you, You are right and that wouldn't fit into 17 syllables. When children pick on others who are just different, it seems to start the one child who is a bully type and spreads to others. Even then its learned behavior, Maybe the bully's been pushed around at home.

Amen! Children are a blank canvas and only learn what they're taught or shown. This is a great 5-7-5 poem. Best of luck with your entry in the upcoming contest. Many blessings to you

So true! God blesses children with a lot of innocence for the most part. Even though at times kids can be really mean to other kids. Still, when a baby is newly born, they really have that special glow from Heaven. Great job with your thoughtful, rhyming 5-7-5! Best wishes in the contest!

Thank you Helen, I agree that children can be mean to those who are different. Still, in a group, it's been my experience, that it starts with one child, who has possibly been pushed around at home and spreads to others who follow the lead. I think it is still learned behavior.

-Very nice image and presentation, Beth.
-The syllable count is good, along with the topic.
-Effective imagery and rhyme.
-I like the opening lines about how children
are happy and free.
-Your last line speaks volumes about
what happens to some of them
because of what they pick up from
adults what they see and hear.
-A very good entry; good luck.

Well done, This echoes my sentiments that we are born pure in spirit and could stay that way if it were not for the unpure thoughts that others foist on us. Nice end rhyme with eyes and wise.

I enjoyed reading your poem. It takes talent to use such few words but leave a message long. The sentiment is priceless and should be taken to heart. I how you keep writing and submitting your work.
