Another great chapter in your book. I can imagine it took some time to get used to hearing that call to prayer. I am glad that what was happening gave you a great chance to teach your children about being able to pray to the Lord any time, and knowing that He heard them and would answer.

Thank you very much for your lovely review and encouragement Anne. Yes, everything became a teaching and learning experience - and it also gave opportunities to speak with non-Christian Australian families about the differences.

Thank you again Wendy for sharing your experiences and of course, setting my nerves on edge. I could not live even a day in a country where I had to hide my face and never look at a man directly.... I would be one of those who was stoned or caned or whatever they do. Terror would keep me behind closed doors. You and your family were very brave and seem to have taken it in stride. (Except maybe for Nancy????)

A beautiful description of life in Yemen. My wife's family is from Iran and they are Muslim, although my wife is a Christian. I think the call to prayer is a hauntingly beautiful chant. There is some sadness in seeing the spiritual distance from God, however.

Thank you for your great review, and also for the six star rating. Greatly appreciated words. Your wife will understand very well. Yes, the chant does grow on one, once we got used to it. The first few times it was very strange, and the mosque was quite close so it was loud. We were actually in Saudi Arabia, but so were the Yemeni men, trying to earn enough to send home to their impoverished families.

Loved your post. You took us on a journey to a distant land. Unfortunately, the women are not seen and not heard (except at home) man is the boss. Still, we are a young country compared with the silk road and dust of the deserts. They know no other way of life - they are kind, love their children and pray a lot. I respect their beliefs. K xx

Still, we are a young country compared with the silk road and dust of the deserts. They know no other way of life - they are kind, love their children and pray a lot. I respect their beliefs. K xx

Thank you Kay! I am so encouraged by your words and your rating. It is a great honour to receive six stars. I value it a lot. How are you doing weather wise? Did you send all the rain down to us. Sydney is a real mess, flooding everywhere. Fortunately we are fairly high and so far so good. More yo come over the next few days. Summer seems to have been a non- event this year.

I was thinking of you down there. So many people have lost everything. The Govt is in turmoil, housing is a priority. We have 14 dead so far. My ex lives on the Hawksbury. We are always in touch. It's still raining here! Are you making Hearing the call...into a travel book? Love, Kay xx

How is your ex? The Hawkesbury is in a very bad situation, worse than last year's very serious flooding.
Yes, I am hoping to combine the stories into a book. But I've never done anything like that before so it's a bit daunting.

Yes it is the long loose white caftan type garment worn by Saudi men. I?d better add it to the notes.
