You write for exactly the same reason I do - to leave a legacy for my children. Of course, I enjoy the process of writing, as well, but my stories reflect who I am and often where I've been.
This is posted as "general fiction", but I assume this is a true accounting of why you write. Thank you for sharing.

Pam you are spot on and I did change this - my intention is non-fiction for certain.
