Oh my goodness - this was so scary! I'm so glad you did not get injured. I know that one of our writers here, country ranch writer, was seriously injured by her horse. You were so brave to try the horse-riding just by observing!!

Not sure about brave, probably just didn't understand how dangerous it could be. Probably had the protection of a guardian angel, in retrospect! Thank you for your lovely comments.

It sounds like you had quite the adventure. It's no wonder you favored tennis after this. Thanks for sharing your ride with us here. Keep up the good work.
I am sorry about your friend.

Wow! What a horrifying story. I enjoyed the way the story flowed, with the introductory information about your father's promise of a horse, and the build up to being allowed to rent a horse. From the time you mounted Stumpy, the story seemed to move as quickly as the horse did building in suspense as Stumpy headed for trees with low-hanging branches. I'm glad you returned to the farm safely, and sorry your friend suffered fatal injuries at age fifteen.

So sorry about your friend and her family.
I enjoyed your story. Having a dream to ride and own a horse and then you got Stumpy! It appears he had some loose wiring that made him go wild even injuring himself.
A very well-told story that keeps the reader's interest.
Best wishes,
Mary

Thank you Mary. A very astute review about Stumpy. Yes I never knew what spooked him, if anything, or if he just went off the deep end at times.

I am sorry to read about your friend. My uncle had a ranch outside of Tulsa. I would go there summers and he taught me to ride. He was a bull rider in the rodeos and is in the Rodeo Hall of Fame. Anyway, he had a horse who was all scared up from the horns of bulls. His job was to take the bull riders off the bulls. He was retired when I rode him. He was very gentle and sweet. Thank you for sharing this contest entry with us and good luck.

Wendy,

How horribly tragic! I am surprised that you were able to do so well on that horse with no lessons! Imagine how you'd have done if you knew what you were doing! hahaha You'd have spanked him nicely and told him exactly what you wanted from him. Wow.

Thanks so much Robyn. Great review I didn?t dare take even one hand off to give him a spanking! Lol.

A life changing experience, indeed. I have always loved horses and love to watch them at the harness races here in Maine. My mother owned one for awhile, but I have never ridden one.

Thanks so much Paul. Horses are magnificent animals, but I haven't ridden for a few years now, though I still love to watch them.

You know, in review, I am glad we were never a collective item together. I may have marveled at your do and dare but being doubled dared to do what you did would have been too harrowing.

Lol! What a great review! Well, I wasn't very brave, just trying to stay on like glue. Double dare ... now there's a thought.
Thank you Tom for your review.

Excellent! I have no suggestions other than perhaps rewriting a couple sentences to better convey the speed of the moment. But that would be just an idea to play with. The few sentences I thought a bit abrupt for the subject of that particular sentence:
He galloped madly, wildly.
He resumed galloping at top speed.

Thank you so much. Your thoughts and suggestions are important to me. I was very restrained by the word count, but I kept those two short to convey a sense of speed. I'll have another look. Many thanks too for the honour of the Exceptional rating and six stars. Always grateful for these.

I understand about short to convey speed and I agree. They just didn't seem smooth. Maybe they will also convey speed if they are combined with the previous sentence. Try it and see what you think. I may be way off.

I agree with you. I have joined them to the preceding sentences, without losing impact (I hope) and without increasing the words (I am sitting exactly on 500 words). Thank you for your help! I do think it reads better, and it takes a good writer to pick up such things. I would nominate you as a reviewer, but I have already nominated my limit for this month (I believe already nominated you as well!)

Oh my gosh, there are parallels with my own experience with horse-riding. I too took up tennis (and motorcycling) after a horse bolted with me and tried to brush me off against a fence and through trees. You showed considerable ability to keep your seat on Stumpy. What did you do to the stable boys, haha.
You conveyed the youthful desire to ride and then the dramatic situation with Stumpy in an engaging manner.
Your author notes show the tragic consequences of a horse riding accident. So utterly sad for Annette's family and friends. Many years ago a friend of mine was thrown and dragged in similar circumstances, receiving head injuries that turned her into a vegetable. Her family eventually decided to turn off life support.

We are so similar! The stable boys deserved something - but I think I was just happy to go home. I never told my parents. In those days there weren't the same safety requirements as there are today. Who would let a fourteen year old inexperienced rider get on a mean ex-racehorse these days! So sad about your friend too. What grief for the parents. Thank so much for reviewing Always appreciated.

I think in many cases safety requirements have become extreme these days.... but they would certainly save a 14-yr-old from such dangers.
