This two-hundred-word story, Uncle Jack, has the required word count and speaks to the facility of the "dead man switch" on trains. My understanding of the mechanism is that the engineer has to stand on it while the train is moving. If he/she should fall, as in dying, the train brake is automatically applied. However, that's just book stuff to me. I've no idea how a train works.

Thanks so much for reviewing Bill. To be honest, I can't remember the details, but I remember he had enough awareness to do what had to be done for the emergency braking system to work, and save the train from possible derailment. It was many years ago, so things may have changed since then too.

Bravo Zulu. Job well done. I had no way of knowing where Jack was going but it came into focus rather quickly before arriving at the writer's destination. Death was not what I expected but it was quite HIckcockish, don't you think?

Ha, not sure about it being Hitchcockish. Well, unfortunately, that was a true story about one of my uncles (of a different name). Thanks so much for your review. I appreciate it, always.

Lol. No. I am pretty old. I know of Alfred H. I just didn?t think my story had the same ?thriller? and suspense qualities. If it does then I am pleased!!

Evidently the uncle lived, too? A wonderful story about fast thinking and saving lives. They used trains for many purposes years ago. That was their only travel to different destinations.

Unfortunately it was a fatal heart attack. But he had the presence of mind in his final moments to ensure the safety of all the passengers. Thank you so much for your review.

Excellent entry for the 200 Word Story writing prompt contest. It has a clear beginning, middle, and an end.

How sad.Uncle Jack sounds like an extraordinary man, how sad that he died.

Good luck in the contest.

Sad story but offers hope.
Thinking of others more than yourself is the greatest gift anyone can give.
This story could have ended differently but hope prevailed

At first, I was a little confused, but after a second reading, I realized it was Uncle Jack who was having a heart attack. Often, trains are equipped with a 'dead man's' switch which automatically stops the train in the event of an engineer's emergency.

Anyway, best of luck with the voters.

Peace, Lee

Thank you Lee. Yes, the "dead man's switch" is the term they use, but I thought readers might not all know it, but would recognise the term "emergency brake". I appreciate your review and good wishes.

Hello Mystery writer a good day to you. I hope this finds you well. I liked your 200 word story entry, sorry to hear about your uncle, he was indeed a hero. To know something wasn't right with himself and to have the forethought to stop the train shows just how decent, thoughtful and intelligent of a man he was. Good work and good luck in the contest.

What a sad story! You tell it very well. I guess we all have to go some time and doing what you love is a good a place as any although by the sounds of it he was young still and so it's pretty tragic. Thanks for sharing

Thank you for your kind review. Yes, that's quite early to die, especially if there was no history of heart disease. A shock to the family of course as well.
