I loved your story and how close you seemed to be to your dad and mum. I love how you treated your dad when he had Alzheimers by erecting a tent and toasting marshmallows! All the best to you!

Thank you for sharing this family memory, this sounds like a fun prompt. This is well written and well presented. The dialogue rings true and reads with a natural flow.

What a wonderful memory to have of your and your family when you were young. Childhood helps to mold who we become and shows our impulses that we hope to get a hold of when we get older. I hope you don't burn little things now.

LisaMay,

This is really beautiful. I'm having to rethink our being sisters, though. I'm a water person. ACK! That means we might threaten each other, you think? But only in close proximity. This was here, on FS, we're perfectly safe. This place where you inspire me with writes like this. *smile*

Thanks for the wonderful review, Robyn. I think if our fire and water got together it could make a nice cup of coffee or tea to enjoy companionably.

    Things could get steamy!

Well, not reeaaallly? I don't drink tea, and by the time I finish putting all the creamer in my coffee, it's cooled off quite a bit. I am not worried about that in the least. hahaha

We are different but the same - I don't drink coffee. I prefer milky tea that's cooled down.

Beautifully and poetically written. It shows me such great memories with family. I wondered what a "damper" was. And a lounge? Is that outside or inside the house? Other than those two words, I enjoyed this sweet memoir.

    Thank you for reviewing.
From the internet: "Damper Bread was a staple of the early Australian settlers' diet. Traditionally, the dough was cooked directly on the coals of an open fire." We used to twist a piece of the dough on a stick and hold it over the fire until it was cooked.

I thought 'lounge room' was a commonly known name. This is a definition from the internet: "In Western architecture, a living room, also called a lounge room, lounge, sitting room, or drawing room, is a room for relaxing and socializing in a residential house or apartment."

Oh okay - but you had an open fire in your living room??

Yes, I still do, but I more usually use an electric fire these days. My house was built in the 1920s.

Hello LisaMay :)
I really enjoyed reading your post.
A great theme that weaves its way through from beginning to end and ties together so nicely. There's such warmth in your write, and it's not from the flames!
Good luck in the contest.
Best wishes, Debra :)

I think we've been a little brainwashed when it comes to overzealousness when it comes to pollution from the warming fire. As we don't destroy cattle for their preoccupation with producing too much methane hehehe. I loved this, I'm so sorry you haven't got the joy of children or grandchildren Jenny, the world has been robbed of your specialness, bless you, you care. Roy

Lisa,
Your writing is so down-to-earth and poignant. I love this wonderful little story.
You opine on both the redeeming qualities of fire, and the dangerous ones too.
I would have loved to have spent time with my dad near a fireplace, roasting marshmallows (He stopped using it a while before he died).
Your story is interesting and touching and humorous.
Good luck in the contest!
Blessings,
Cindy

My husband was an Aries and this is why we got on so well as I am a Sagittarius, you made me smile here as the dog lay so close the fire he was singeing! Ha ha ha, being cremated is better for the planet I think, sorry your Mum died when you were just a teenage Lisa, it sounds like you treated your Father well and I am sorry he suffered from Alzheimer's, I enjoyed this vibrant snippet of your life, love Dolly x

I liked your story. It began with fire and will end that way, or so it seems. Thank you for sharing this story here, and keep up the good work. Best wishes.
