I loved the first 7 lines of this. I have a friend with schizophrenia and they really characterise what she goes through, so with that in my mind, the part about who she once had been and sleeping on the sidewalk didn't seem to fit for me. I'm sure you had a different picture in your mind when you wrote it.

Thank you for reading my poem. My son has had schizophrenia since age 18, with his family he is safe and cared for. But so many people on the street who are mentally ill, don't get or won't accept help for thier illness. There is a young woman who frequents the parking lot in the shopping center that I go to. I've actually talked to her quite a few times and she is well spoken. However, when night falls, she sleeps in a corner of the lot on an old blanket. It's heartbreaking. It's just how I saw it. Thanks again.

Could you put that in the author's notes about the young woman? I enjoyed hearing about her and I expect others would. It's lovely that you wrote it with her in mind.

This a such a poignant poem about the struggles of mental illness. Wonderful job bringing to light an important issue with your poetry. The image you used also went very well and drove your point home for the reader.

This was very beautiful and very sad. I can almost relate. Thank you for bringing attention to this kind of thing that happens far too often. Best wishes.

The city where I live has a large homeless population. Seeing them on the streets, and seeing this picture you've used, is heartbreaking. You've written a compassionate and thoughtful poem about a condition that should not exist. You've also met the requirements of the Etheree challenge, and I wish you luck.

Hello fellow poet a good day to you, I hope this finds you well. I liked your Etheree writing prompt entry, sad but executed on the syllable count. Good job and good luck in the contest.

Really good job. How many people have we all seen sleeping on the sidewalk ore somewhere else outside, within the city? I'm sure that there is a vestige of the original person tucked away somewhere inside that battered body.

This has a particular place in my heart because my son suffers as well from schizophrenia...he's safe with his family though, that's the difference. Thanks for reading my poem. :)

Hello Author, WOW. Your poem says it all. I grew up and NYC, and you see everything there. As a child, we had a woman who lived in the street much like the woman you wrote about in your poem. She sold newspapers. Your poem reads and flows well, and your message is clear. Of special note:

Yet, somewhere deep inside herself
a small part of who she once had been
stays hidden as she sleeps on the sidewalk

(Unfortunately, this problem gets bigger every year. Where once there was "a woman" who slept on the street, now there are many women and men who sleeps on the street.

In the case of my lady, she had an apartment to everyone's surprise, and when she died, she had a fat bankbook. Who would have thought it???? Unfortunately, it's the unmedicated disease that controls them.

Well-chosen photo. As this is a contest entry, I wish you good luck. LateBloomer
